This approach does not require the isolation of the bacteria and even a small amount of
bacterial DNA enables detection by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique.
Information regarding the bacterial species in oral specimens, such as saliva and dental
plaque, has been accumulating since the latter half of 1990s. Such data has not only
contributed to the analysis of the bacterial flora but also to the development of the beneficial
methods for clinical use.
In this chapter, the clinical features of periodontal diseases in the pediatric dentistry field
are described, followed by the presentation of the molecular biological data obtained from our
analysis of various clinical specimens taken from Japanese children and adolescents.
