BELFAST

Belfast history and Folklore by Joe Graham

http://belfast.rushlightmagazine.com/

Royal Avenue was once called Hercules Street after Hercules Langford.

AND…… Hercules Street was first called Herison’s Lean.

Old map of Belfast Factory Row = Berry Street

Hudson's Entry = Gresham Street

Hercules Lane = Royal Avenue.

= HERCULES LANE – Butcher district (McAnally family of butchers – also bordering Barrack Street – another McAnally butcher (see above) – this area bordered onto the factory dwellings of those who worked in the textile industries in Belfast (Hugh Kennedy was a weaver, John tried to dispose of his ill-gotten sheep from James White to the butchers McAnally and Dugan – who was also situated in Hercules Street - in 1815 in Belfast) – HERCULES LANE IS NOW ROYAL AVENUE – Simon McAnally (butcher) and James Dugan (butcher) – of Hercules Street – have names listed in the 1852 Belfast directory – ABOVE)
