Sequencing and Predicting Activities
Two important steps in the critical-thinking process are the ability to sequence
details and to predict information based on prior knowledge and context clues.
The activities in this section provide opportunities to help students learn and
develop these skills.
Studies have shown that students who work in pairs or small groups tend to
come up with more divergent responses. Therefore, you may wish to try a col-
laborative approach to some of these activities. These activities are especially
well-suited to collaborative learning:
• Happy Birthday!
• The Survival Game
• Nim
Use this chart to help you identify activities to use with various curriculum
areas. Instructions for teacher-led activities are on the activity pages, while
notes for using the reproducibles follow the chart.

Caution students to follow the directions carefully. If they come up with the
wrong birthday, have them review their work to determine where the mistake is.

Page 53: The Survival Game
Have students discuss the way they ranked the items. Explain that they should
be prepared to defend their rankings. After students compare the way they
ranked the items, have them work in groups to create graphs to show the
results. For example, students might make bar graphs to show the five items
ranked highest by the most class members.
Page 54: Pressed for Time
Planning and scheduling time are important real-world skills. Discuss with the
class how they might use such skills in their day-to-day lives.
Page 55: Gomuku
Assign students to work with a partner to play this game. After students have
played, discuss how Gomuku is similar to and different from tic-tac-toe.
Page 56: Nim
In this strategy game, students must figure out how to leave an opponent with
only one empty space. Encourage students to explain the strategies they use.
Page 57: Nile Numbers
Students might enjoy researching the number systems of other ancient civiliza-
tions such as the Maya. 
Page 58: Order, Please
When students complete the page, have them share with the class how and why
they ordered the items. How many different ways of ordering did the class use?
Page 59: Palindrome Challenge
This activity may be difficult for some students. If it proves frustrating, pair
these students with more verbal learners. Be sure to have students share their
palindromes with the class.
Page 60: Big Questions
This activity calls for students to think in global terms to make predictions. As
a follow-up, have students choose one prediction and use it as the basis for a
short story.
Page 61-62: Build a Pyramid
In this activity, students must follow directions to make a paper pyramid. Dis-
play the finished pyramids with other Egyptian-related activities such as those
on pages 57 and 63.
Page 63: Secret of the Pyramids
Ask students to use each of the words in their pyramids in a complete sentence
to show the word’s meaning.
