peşəkarlığından, sosial-məişət və sanitariya məsələlərinin kifayət qədər yüksək
səviyyədə olduğundan xəbər verir.
arxlardan ibarətdir. Başlanğıcını şimal qala divarları istiqamətindən götürən su
xətlərindən biri hamam-kompleksə daxil olur. Su və kanalizasiya xətlərinin üstü bir
qayda olaraq iri sal daşlarla örtülüb. Kanalizasiya xətlərindən birinin üzərində
həllinin göstəricisi kimi dəyərləndirilməlidir.
minlərlə əşya tərəfimizdən qeydiyyata alınaraq tədqiqata cəlb olunub.

LATEST RESULTS OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL
INVESTIGATIONS IN AGSU
Agsu Archaeological Expedition held an event on subject "Latest Results of
Archaeological Investigations in Agsu" together with the region's Executive Power
on 6 August, 2010. The representatives of the region community and press
representatives participated at the event.
The participants got first acquainted with Medieval Agsu Town and
archaeological excavations carried out there. The expedition guidance introduced
investigations implemented in III, IV and V excavation sites and the newest
findings displayed to the guests and responded to numerous questions of theirs.
Opening of an exhibition reflecting the newest results of archaeological
investigations was held in Agsu History and Local Lore Museum following
acquaintance with the excavations.
A wide briefing was organized for representatives of press and community
after acquaintance with the exhibition. First deputy head of Agsu region Executive
Power, Rasim Novruzov opened the briefing with introductory remark and said:
Esteemed ladies and gentlemen!
As it is known, every person is obliged to protect historical and cultural
monuments under Article 77 of Constitution of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
Because cultural monuments had been national treasure of our nation over the
history.
Historical and cultural monuments are values directly connected with
archaeological
and
architectural
objects,
ethnographic,
epigraphic
and
anthropological materials; buildings related to historical events and personalities,
memory places, things and religious faith of nation.
As you know, there are many historical and cultural monuments in the area
of Agsu town. Thus, ancient cemetery, temple and settlement belonged to antique
period in Nuydi village, settlement of eminent warlord and state figure Javanshir,
known monuments like Girlartepe settlement near Girlar village; Xanyurdu curgan
(a hill on ancient graves) in Arabushagi village; Garachibulag belonged to lll-l
centuries BC in the area of Nuran village and Khazinadag inherent in middle ages
near Padar village and Medieval Agsu Town we will talk today.
Order signed by President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mr. llhamAliyevin
February 2008 was a turning point towards a new stage in development of
archaeology science in Azerbaijan. From this standpoint along with other regions
223
of the republic, archaeological investigations which were carried out also in Agsu
region make new contributions to archaeology science. Since March of this year
archaeological investigations were launched in Medieval Agsu Town situated
nearby Ulguj village of our region.
Scientists, other guests and representatives of the region community taking
part in a range of events held on subject "Haydar Aliyev sample of careful attitude
towards historical cultural heritage" dedicated to 87-year anniversary of our
Nationwide Leader Haydar Aliyev on May 7 made acquaintance of the exhibition
consisted of archaeological excavations carried out in medieval town and materials
discovered from there. Later on a presentation ceremony of book-album "Medieval
Agsu Town" and a web page of Agsu Archaeological Expedition took place.
I can say on behalf of the leadership of the region Executive Power that all
of these were welcomed with great interest and appreciated highly by intellectuals
of Agsu and entirely the region community. I would like you to believe that
interest of people in historical cultural heritage rose for a short time notingly. Each
of mostly discussed issues at least in each house in Agsu touches archaeological
investigations implemented in our region and unique material cultural samples
which were displayed. Interest of every person from child to grown-up in history of
Motherland increased. I thank chief of Agsu Archaeological Expedition, Doctor of
History Gafar Jabiyev on my behalf and on behalf of the region community toiled a
lot in this work, by taking this chance. Large activity of deputy expedition chief
and candidate of historical sciences, our compatriot Fariz Khalilli is seen clearly. I
express my gratitude to Fariz as well.
Dear ladies and gentlemen!
Today's event is dedicated to the newest results of Agsu archaeological
investigations. Thus, I give word to chief of Expedition, Doctor of History Gafar
Jabiyev to inform about latests results which the expedition has achieved.
Dealing with the newest results of implemented archaeological
investigations the expedition chief Gafar Jabiyev touched mainly the following
moments:
- Dear ladies and gentlemen!
Let me above all express my sincere and deep gratitude to the persons
taking part in today's event for perceptible attitude towards our history, past and
study of the monuments - a memory of the past on behalf of the staff of Agsu
Archaeological Expedition. Your participation here is an indicator of this
perceptible attitude.
It is one of our next meetings with intellectuals and media representatives
from Agsu. I am glad that such meetings are held traditionally. To recall, in fact we
gathered in an opening ceremony of the first exhibition consisted of Agsu findings
in Museum of History and Ethnography of the region on the occasion of
anniversary of Great Leader Haydar Aliyev on 7 May, two months ago. We have
224
already held today the opening of the second exhibition. We presented "Medieval
Agsu Town" book-album two months ago. We introduce you today publication of
the book in English language. We presented a web page of the expedition two
months ago. English variation of our web page will serve you since today.
As it is seen, we realize this work jointly with Agsu region Executive
Power. I must confess that led by head of Executive Power Enver Seyidaliyev,
local executive structures of the region support care, proposals and initiatives of
the expedition.
Definitely, these are the issues assuming great importance both for us and
you. It tion site covering the area of over 600 sq/ms. You were detailed informed
about its results in our last meetings. However, investigations have partially been
completed in IV excavation site surrounding nearly 2300 sq/ms area. Work was re-
launched in V excavation site of 500 sq/ms field. Pay attention to the fact that IV
excavation site is still the widest field archaeologically studied for a short while in
the area of Azerbaijan. I can briefly say only these words about significant findings
displayed there.
First about fortress walls. The remnants of basis part of fortress walls were
primarily displayed in this area. The fortress walls are built along inner part of a
ditch made of hewed river stone in 30-40s of XVIII century.
The remnants of a dwelling-house (length-17.70 m, width 5 m) contained of
two rooms adherent to the fortress walls were found in 1 and 1a squares of the
excavation site. Capacity of one of the rooms is 30, 2 square metre, while the
other's is 15 sq/ms. Hearth rests were fixed inside both of the rooms. A well of
which depth is about 6 meter and diameter of outfall is 1, 3 meter was displayed in
the large room. Each of them has a separate entrance door in south direction
though there is a door between the rooms. It is fixed that there is a window, 3
niches in a small room, while the large room has two windows and 4 niches. The
windows and doors of the rooms are in south direction. One of the notable
moments is that numerous large-scale mine stones hewed accurately were
discovered from the noted rooms. It is supposed that a part of these stones are used
as a window and niche support, while other part is used as an equivalent to a
padded chair around hearths. Let's add that, the front part of the two-room building
is cobbled with stone plate hewed especially thoroughly.
One of the most interesting constructions of fixed in IV excavation site was
displayed in squares of 6-a, 6 and 6a. The construction of one room (7-meter length
and 4,30-meter width) was built from hewed river stone. Entrance door and a
window of the building is south direction. There are niches in four sides of its walls
(2-in back wall and 1-in each of top walls). The wall was usually onefold built in
the part of the niches. According to ethnographic observations, such niches are
intended to place dishes and bedding. These implemented a function of wall
cupboards used broadly in modern buildings. The rest of one oven (tendir) (under
225
floor) and two near hearths were displayed inside the building. The water line
consisted of pottery pipes were found under the building floor. The water line is
built accurately in the square opposite the building and combines with small man-
made pond plastered inside. Many walls in a ruined condition inside the noted
building-cornice ornaments draw greater interest. The expedition staff presently
continues investigations in direction of studying the fixing of the building talked
about.
The most interesting discovery of IV excavation site is a bathroom complex
displayed in squares of 6-a, 6 and 6a. The floor, walls, doors, man-made pond, a
part of its bushes, and hearth of the complex which have nearly 25-meter length
and 6, 5-meter width could be safely preserved. To note, thickness of the cultural
layer reaches 3, 4 meter in the area where a bath-room is built. A bathroom
complex consists of several halls. There are a special hole having outlet to the
hearth to heat the water, a special pond and dressing halls into it. The walls of the
bathroom complex were constructed from river stone, while vault of their surface
were made from baked bricks. A cupola stone with a hole in several parts on it was
found while the inner part of bathroom was cleansed. Supposedly, the stone
belongs to vault of surface of one of the bathroom rooms and holes on it served to
elucidate its inside.
A small man-made pond, built designeo in fine architectural style in middle
part special padded chairs under bushy cells around it and a romantic passage to
the bathroom room similar to a tunnel, i.e. all of these show taste of Agsu
residents, professionalism of local masters, sufficiently high level of social way of
life and sanitary issues.
Other remarkable finding includes devices belonging to water supply and
sewerage network of the town. Let's recall that pottery pipes, or water lines built
with stone around were displayed in some places of IV excavation site. Sewerage
lines looking like water lines outwardly consist of special ditches built by stones
from each side. One of water lines sourcing from direction of northern fortress
walls embraces a bathroom complex. Water and sewerage lines were covered as a
rule with coarse raft stones. A special stone plate which have holes like a multi-
shawl flower and serving rainy water raft to the net was found over one of sewer-
age lines.
In our opinion, density of water and sewerage network should be valued as
an indicator of sufficient high solution of the issues of water supply and sanitary
hygienic issues in the town, or studied area.
Large-scale excavations principally aim to study separate problems related
to town topography. One of the forwarded serious issues in this field is research of
plans and architectural features of estates, streets and squares, public houses,
dwelling houses and subsidiaries of the town. Today we can assure that certain
results had been already achieved in this line. It is simply required to work more on
226
these results, and examine time and again acceptableness and valid-ness of primary
results on basis of the additional materials. I am sure that archaeological
investigations ongoing in Agsu will clarify all questions appeared in this field.
Dear ladies and gentlemen!
I did not talk about material cultural samples achieved during
archaeological excavations just simply. Because you saw these findings with your
eyes both in excavation site and in the exhibition organized in the museum. I
would like only to say that thousands of things were registered by us and
implicated to investigation about separate vocation till now.
Dear Agsu people and very distinguished media representatives, at the end
of my speech, I am appealing you. Keep on following the investigations attentively
after that continued in medieval Agsu town. I want you to believe that the most
interesting findings and novelties to elucidate dark pages of our history are still in
front part. You will be witnesses of all of these.
Thanks for your attention!
Now please, let me to introduce you a book-album "Medieval Agsu Town"
and English variation of web page of the expedition. Deputy expedition chief,
candidate of historical sciences Fariz Khalilli will inform you about it.
The presentation speech of deputy of expedition chief Fariz Khalilli was
welcomed with great interest concerning a book-album "Medieval Agsu Town"
and English variation of web page of the expedition.
A lot of questions were responded by the participants in the end.
Briefing was over with it.
Briefing taken place in Agsu was widely broadcasted in news program of
ITV, ATV and Lider TV after a day, on 7 August.
