Arsen G. Avagyan
Doctor of Historical Sciences

Arsen Avagyan was born in Yerevan in 1972. In 1989 he entered the Faculty of History, Yerevan State University, from which he graduated cum laude in 1994. In 1994-96 he was postgraduate studend at the Armenian History Chair, Yerevan State University; in 1996-1998 he studied and graduated from the Diplomatic Academy, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Russian Federation (Moscow).

In different years, he has attended diplomatic training courses in Egypt, Iran, South Korea, the Marshall Center (Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany), as well as Genocide studies in Toronto (Zoryan Institute, Canada) and Auschwitz (the Raphael Lemkin Seminar for Genocide Prevention, Poland).

In 1996, he defended his PhD thesis at the Institute of History, National Academy of Sciences, Republic of Armenia, and in 2002, - his Doctoral dissertation at the Institute of Asian and African Countries, Lomonosov Moscow State University.

He is the author of 5 monographs  and 43 academic articles  published in Moscow, Istanbul and Yerevan, some of which were published in Russian, Turkish, Iranian and a number of European academic journals. A. Avakian is known for his works on the coverage of the Circassian factor in the Ottoman Empire and Republican Turkey, the relations between the Armenian political parties and the Young Turks.

Since 1994 he has worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Republic of Armenia. He has held various positions – Attache, 3rd Secretary, Department Head, and Advisor. In 2001-2005, he was the first permanent representative of the Republic of Armenia at the Organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (residence in Istanbul); in 2007-2009, he was an Advisor of the Embassy of the Republic of Armenian to the Islamic Republic of Iran.



He has the diplomatic rank of the Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary.
He is married and has a son and a daughter.
