Engineers Without Borders (EWB): Jean reported on her application to EWB for Eden Primary School. Eden Primary was built in 1981, serving 350 children with no electricity in the 13 classrooms, two one-hole outdoor latrines to serve all children, water from an outside faucet, children drinking from bucket with common cup). EWB replied to Jean’s application with the following questions:

  • It seems from the application that there is considerable “maintenance” type of issues such as closure of openings that do not require the assistance of EWB. Would these not be better performed locally?

  • It appears from the application that the expertise may exist within San Ignacio community to provide electricity to these schools. Is the object of the request for funding from EWB or design assistance from EWB? EWB requires community financial participation, which can be sweat equity, housing support, etc.

  • I am confused as to what organization is requesting EWB assistance. Mentioned within the application is Education committee for CAYO District, Seventh Day Adventists and an unnamed medical mission. Would you please clarify?

  • The application mention the buildings are owned by the Eden School. Is this a private school? If so who is the owner of this school or is it self supporting?

Jean can answer #3 and #4. For #2: community participation: Tharine says that meals can be provided, and housing too except that people are embarrassed that they cannot offer nicer housing. Sweat equity: Apparently the men are working long hours 7 days a week just to support their families and haven’t a free day to work on the school.

Greg has had contacts with EWB. He says they favor water and solar projects (over just plain electricity). He says that there are two types of chapters: professional, and university (far more are university). EWB raises money for the projects. The group agreed that solar would be necessary because the school can’t afford city electricity. There was a concern that solar panels would be stolen.

Judy mentioned that Herb Rubenstein works with iCAST {The International Center for Appropriate and Sustainable Technology) and suggested a cooperation – Judy emailed back that we did not want to spend money on it [text of Herb’s email of 01/07/08: You know I have an idea.  If you want to learn more about iCAST there might be some real synergy between us on this project.  We might be a good institutional home for your Belize project.  We could add our experience to the project and possibly bolster your fundraising chances.  We would not want to help operate the project and our role could be very inexpensive.] [Clarification 01/10/08 by Herb: I obviously created one source of confusion.  By saying our involvement would be “inexpensive” I did not mean to imply up front, out of pocket costs, to be paid out on your part for our cooperation.  I was implying that if we helped you get the contract, and helped staff the project, and helped manage the project as your “fiscal agent” or official 501 (C) (3) home for this effort, then our role would not cost the project very much. I hope this helps clarify our potential role and I apologize for the shorthand explanation in my email that led to Jean’s reasonable assumption that we would cost your project up front money.]

Adam says that he works on the Golden Sustainability Initiative and that he has looked into EWB. Colorado School of Mines (CSM) has an undeveloped chapter. Boulder and Denver have professional chapters. Adam will follow up by looking into the CSM chapter.

Greg suggested we try the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). Sue knows someone to contact at NREL and will do so. She says they do consulting, they do not do hands-on.
Joe Lavigne: The group decided not to follow up on Joe’s presentation in November for Global Intersections, Inc.
Primitiva: Jean reported that Tharine called her today: she was visiting Mopan Technical High School in Benque to check up on Primitiva – Primitiva has been absent for the two days that the school has been back in session. During our meeting we spoke again with Tharine, and she reports that she spoke with Marcelo Torres, the vice-principal, who told her that Primitiva didn’t have money for transportation any more so that was why she wasn’t coming. Then Torres said that we could use the tutor money for transportation, so she could come again. Tharine will check back next week. Judy will telephone Mr Torres tomorrow (01/09).

[Update on Primitiva: She has not returned to school. Judy spoke to Primitiva today (01/12) and she has to stay home and babysit because her two sisters have gone to work in San Pedro and her mother’s hand is broken and her father is chopping trees; she says she wants to go to school and she sounds sad. She said there is no other person who could babysit, not even another village girl if we paid her. Judy told her to call Mr Torres and for her to think, think of an idea and Judy will call back 01/13 or 01/14.]

Rotary: Greg has a contact at the Highlands Ranch Rotary; Sue is a member of Southwest Jeffco Rotary; Judy is now a member of the Golden Rotary, and is on the International Projects committee. Sue said that to initiate a project, we write the text for the grant application and then send it to San Ignacio Rotary so they know what to say. Judy is in email contact with Andre Lopez of the San Ignacio Rotary (a friend of Tharine’s) and with Kay Menzies, Assistant Governor of the Rotary Club of Belize. Sue says one can apply for a $6000 Rotary grant for a team to travel to a site.
Shipping: Greg is wondering about shipping costs for a container of medical and school supplies. Sue thought one could apply to Rotary for that. Someone suggested driving it in a big truck. Greg has been investigating FedEx and Continental Airlines. Sue said that relatives of FedEx employees get a 75% discount – so we will see if anyone knows such a person (Judy can ask on Golden Newsletter).

Judy wrote an email to Francis Ford Coppola at Blancaneaux (near San Ignacio, with private air strip) inviting him to transport books from Denver to there – no answer yet – she will follow up.

Mark Akins is inquiring about a Foothills Academy family's connection to a shipping company.
Fundraising Events: Rebecca announced that on Sunday, April 13, we will have a fundraising event, the Coyote Brothers Band (blues) at the Oriental Theater, 44th & Tennyson. It’s a cabaret atmosphere, small tables. The theater holds 735 people. $20 for the concert, food & drink extra. Each of us should bring at least 10 people. Rebecca is arranging advertising in Westword, Onion, and Centura Health.

Rebecca will arrange a Valentine's chocolate fund raiser.

Accounts: Chris Robinson, the Treasurer, is to open a checking account for Belize Prima Education Project. Any money not requiring a non-profit tax deduction should be made out to (or endorsed to) the Belize Prima Education Project, and sent to Chris Robinson, 16341 Bluebonnet Drive, Parker, CO 80134, to be deposited in this account along with a note of the purpose of that money (e.g. “Primitiva”; “Books”; “Shipping”; “General”). Chris will keep track of the money under each heading (in & out).

Any money that needs to have a non-profit tax deduction should be made out to Rocky Mountain Adventist Healthcare Foundation and sent to Chris Robinson. She would then record it (with its purpose), and mail it to Greg Hodgson, International Medical Missions,

Centura Health, 100 Health Park Drive, Louisville, CO 80027, specifying that it is for the Belize Prima Education Project. This Foundation then can write checks made out to the appropriate recipient for our projects.

This arrangement with the Healthcare Foundation takes away any need we would have had to consider again whether we should form a 501(c)3 corporation. It also basically removes our need for an accounting consultant.

Student Scholarships: Rebecca reported that Foothills Academy families want to be pen pals and match each family with a student from Eden Primary School that needs a scholarship.
Next Meeting: No date was proposed. [We have been meeting on 2nd Tuesdays, so Feb 12 should be the next meeting.]
