DALLAS TX

Dallas TX sits right in the middle of the 6th largest economy in the country. While Dallas itself has a population of just over 1 million people, the Dallas-Ft. Worth-Arlington metroplex has a population of nearly 7 million people.

ECONOMY

Dallas and the metroplex had a GDP of $375 million in 2010, and is still going strong. In fact, Dallas ranks 14th in the world for GDP. The economy of the area is derived from commerce, computer technology, banking, transportation and its accompanying logistics, and healthcare. Medical research is another big industry in Dallas. In addition, you’ll find that Dallas is 3rd in the number of Fortune 500 companies that headquarter in their city. And, it does all of this without any links to an ocean – the only city in the United States to do so.

Dallas is ranked as an Alpha-World City, and has the distinction of being the only city in the area to achieve that ranking.

SHIPPING LANE

Dallas got its start as an economic hub with oil and cotton – both industries that heavily relied on the railroad. Cattle drives historically targeted the Dallas area. In fact, nearby Ft. Worth was known as “Cow Town”, where huge herds of cattle were processed, sold, and shipped. With its location in the upper part of the body of Texas, it was the perfect place to build an interstate highway system, with four major highways converging in the city. Now, in addition to railways and highways, you’ll find the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, which is one of the busiest in the world, and certainly one of the largest.

ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT

Dallas is home to the Dallas Museum of Art, the Trammell & Margaret Crow Collection of Asian Art, The Dallas Children’s Theater, and the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center, which is home to the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. The Dallas Wind Symphony also is housed at the Meyerson Symphony Center.

AT&T’s Dallas Center for Performing Arts also provides rehearsal and performance venues for the Texas Ballet Theater and the Dallas Opera. In addition, the Dee and Charles Wyly Theater supports the Dallas Theater Center and the Black Dance Theater.

CHARITABLE ORGANIZATIONS

The people of Dallas share a strong commitment to helping the less fortunate, supporting many charitable organizations such as The Salvation Army, Catholic Charities, Habitat for Humanity (building houses for the needy), and many others. You can donate cars for Heritage for the Blind, which helps people in Dallas who have visual impairment and other disabilities. People of all ages who have developed or been born with vision problems can learn about their eye disorders. They can also find rehabilitation and get support that allows them to regain their independence. Heritage for the Blind accepts car donations on their website. These vehicle donations provide many vital services to the blind in Dallas.

Whether you are a resident or a visitor, Dallas has a plenty to offer. Everyone enjoys the action, diversity, and sense of wonder that flourish in Dallas.
