Archaeologists are scientists who study human life and cultures of the past. Some
archaeologists work outside on field crews, digging and searching where people lived long
ago. Field crews discover all kinds of things from the past, including findings, homes, roads,
tools and even rubbish pits. Archaeologists often deal in certain areas of study. One kind of
archaeologists, for example, studies the remaining parts of animals from sites where humans
lived long ago. They want to know more about the animals which were raised for food, or kept
as companions. Some archaeologists study remaining parts of ships. They look for evidence
that explain why the ships sunk. The findings they find at the bottom of the ocean can reveal
where people traveled, how they got there. Not all archaeologists work outdoors. Some work at
museums, universities, or parks. They study the records that other archaeologists create and
help preserve the findings that field crews dig up. These specialists not only discover secrets
about life long ago, but they also help the public to understand those discoveries.

Vampire bats may seem threatening, but these small animals aren’t as terrifying as their name
suggests. In fact, they do not do harm to humans, but they can even help humans live longer.
You may be surprised to hear that vampire bats don’t actually suck blood. Instead, they stick an
animal with their two front teeth and lick the blood from the cut. A chemical in the bat’s saliva,
liquid in the mouth, prevents blood from being thick. This allows the bat to feed without causing
pain to its victim or even waking it up. The vampire bat takes only about two tablespoons of
blood at a time. Vampire bats are sweet, gentle creatures that live together in groups. Like good
neighbours, vampire bats are willing to share their meals with each other during hard times. It
seems that these gentle creatures live for the good of the group. Scientists have studied ways to
use the chemical in the saliva to break up thick blood in people who have had a heart attack.
The very same saliva helped to save human lives.
