Dear Mr. Ambassador,

Further to discussions with member s of your delegation, I propose that the meeting of the Trade Policy Review Body on China be held on 21 and 23 May 2008.

In line with this date, the schedule for the Review's preparation would be as follows:

• 
  initial request for information/data to be sent to the authorities by 28 February 2007;
  
• 
  receipt of initial information/data from the authorities by 30 March 2007;
  
• 
  depending on initial information/data received, a possible questionnaire would be sent to your authorities;
  
• 
  Secretariat's first visit to Beijing in 14–18 May 2007;
  
• 
  Secretariat's second visit to Beijing in 24–28 September 2007;
  
• 
  draft chapters of the Secretariat report to be sent successively to the authorities for comment, with the last chapter to reach the authorities by 30 November 2007;
  
• 
  authorities' comments should normally reach the Secretariat within 3-4 weeks of receipt of each chapter, with the comments on the last chapter reaching the Secretariat by 31 December 2007;
  
• 
  Secretariat report to be finalized by 14 February 2008;
  
• 
  Secretariat report to be sent for translation by 14 March 2008;
  
• 
  Secretariat report to be distributed to WTO Members by 14 April 2008; and
  
• 
  Meeting of the Trade Policy Review Body on 21 and 23 May 2008.
  

As you may be aware, your authorities would also need to prepare a policy statement outlining the main principles and directions of China's trade policies. To ensure this document's translation and distribution with the Secretariat's report, it should reach the Secretariat by 3 March 2008.

Besides myself, the members of the TPR Division responsible for the Secretariat report will be Michael Daly together with Masahiro Hayafuji, Zheng Wang, and one or two other members of staff. Mr. Daly, Mr. Hayafuji, and Ms. Wang can be reached as follows:
