Perseus Rescues Andromeda

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

Perseus, a son of Zeus, has just decapitated the Gorgon Medusa and, with the help of a magical helmet that made him invisible, escaped from her vengeful sisters, Stheno and Euryale. From this adventure, Perseus flies to Ethiopia, where he encounters a princess in distress.

  • 10: quam: /& 13 quem: rel. pronoun, case vs. antecedent giving gender & no.

When Andromeda had been led down to the shore and tied/bound to a crag/rock (for so had the oracle ordered), Perseus suddenly flew toward (her). He listens to/hears the entire situation/affair and sees the girl. At the same time, the monster is observed from far way. Already the monster is approaching with great speed to the place where the girl is.
But Perseus, when he saw these things, drew his sword and flew into the lofty sky. And for a long time he fights bitterly with the monster. At last/finally Perseus killed the monster and Andromeda was safe. For this great favor, Cepheus married (off) Andromeda to Perseus (literally: “...gave Andromeda into marriage to Perseus”). In the territory of Ethiopia Perseus and Andromeda lived for a few years in great honor. But at last Perseus sought/searched for his mother with Andromeda whom he found safe on the island of Polydectes. Afterwards, Polydectes and Perseus’ grandfather, since they had been bad, were killed by Perseus: the former/that man was turned into stone by the sight of Medusa’s head; the latter/this man was killed by a discuss which Perseus had thrown in (the) games.*
*The simplified story here makes it sound as if Perseus intentionally killed his grandfather, whose name was Acrisius. Even though Acrisius, fearing an oracle that his daughter Danaë’s son would kill him, had long ago set both the infant Perseus and Danaë in a chest to float away in the sea, Perseus wanted to reconcile with his grandfather and, in most versions, did. While participating in a friend’s athletic games, however, Perseus threw a discuss that flew off course and struck the elderly Acrisius in the foot, thereby accidentally killing him, thus fulfilling the prophecy.
