Assessment of intelligence:



  • Binet >>> Binet-Simon Scale (1908). It is a cognitive ability and intelligence test that is used to diagnose developmental or intellectual deficiencies in young children.

Personality testing:

  • Word-association methods (1905). A simple enabling exercise where research participants suggest words that they can associate in any way with something relevant to the research. They are asked to do this quickly, without thinking too hard.

Wechsler Intelligence Test >>> first satisfactory measure of adult intelligence

Projective Testing: patients respond to ambiguous test stimuli


  • Rorschach Inkblots (1921)

  • Thematic Apperception Test (1935)

  • Bender-Gestalt Test (1938)

Diagnosis and assessment: post-war and beyond

Minnesota multiphasic personality inventory >>> it is a well-researched and respected test designed to help mental health professionals diagnose mental health disorders and conditions. Its self-reporting inventory that evaluates where you fall on 10 scales related to different mental health disorders.

Radical Behaviorism (in the late 1950s) >>> only overt behaviors can be measured.

Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-I, 1952) ~ DSM-5 (2013).

The Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-5 (SCID-5).

Neuropsychological Assessment >>> an assessment approach based on empirically established brain-behavior relationships – that evaluates a person’s relative strengths and weaknesses across a number of areas.
