different methodological approaches to the associations between the two disciplines have been
developed.
Aim: The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between
architecture and
music disciplines that have been established until today and to question the new approaches.
Regarding the relationship between architecture and music, many philosophers and architects
have developed metaphorical approaches. Since Pythagoras and his predecessors, it has been
observed that there has been a great deal of emphasis on the impact of mathematics on these
two disciplines. The theoretical architect Leon Battista Alberti, who combined the ratios of
architecture and music, referred to musical proportions and values in his designs. Corbusier’s
interpretation of the relationship between architecture and music over the ratios reveals that the
architect, who had significant studies on proportional principles, adopted a divine order disco-
urse. Apart from these approaches, the works of Vitruvius, Le Corbusier, Renzo Piano, Richard
Rogers and Penda Design Team present examples of technical interaction. Markus Dermietzel
and Adrian Levy contributed to the architecture-music interaction with the cognitive approach.
However, there is a gap in the sensory dimension of architecture-music interaction. This study
aims to question sensual and perceptual connections in the intersection of music and architec-
ture.
Scope: Approaches that indicate similarities between architecture and music have been
studied and classified until now, and fictional connections between these two disciplines have
been revealed. Fictional connections between the two disciplines are presented. These metho-
dological approaches are: Metaphorical connections, numerical and geometrical intersections,
analogical methods, technical connections, digital methods.
Short Literature Knowledge:
The inquiry of the interaction between architecture and music is based on even the predecessors
of Pythagoras. The ‘divine order’ rhetoric has existed since the Ancient Ages. According to this
phrase, the universe is in ideal order based on the numerical and geometrical structure of so-
unds. The distances between the planets are the correspondence of the notes. Every note in the
octave corresponds to a planet. The harmony in the universe is called ‘celestial harmony’. This
universe-music relation has been described in many works. The development of music occur-
ring paralel with the particular period in architecture reveal the intensity of interaction. Gothic
era structures are also discussed in this context. In the Renaissance period, designs were made
with the aim of reaching the ideal level with reference to musical notes. In addition to numerical
and geometric approaches, technical issues related to acoustics were developed during these
periods. From the modern era until today, connections between architecture and music have
still been attempted to be discovered. Gürhan Tümer makes many comments on the metapho-
rical connections of architects and philosophers in architecture-music interaction. It has been
