and  2 n d   B n s .   H e   t r i e d   t o   r e j o i n   t h e   R e g t .   i n  1914,  b u t   w a s

t u r n e d   d o w n   b y   t h e   M . O .   W h e n   t h e   H o m e  Service Bris,  w e r e

raised  h e   w a n g l e d   h i s   w a y   i n   a n d  served  u n t i l  1919.  D u r i n g

the  w h o l e   o f   t h i s   t i m e   h e  was servant  t o   M a j o r   t h e  Hon. Bowes-

Lyons.

On  h i s   m a n t l e p i e c e   s t o o d   a n   o a k   c l o c k   o n   w h i c h   w a s   a

silver  p l a t e   b e a r i n g   t h e   i n s c r i p t i o n ,   " P r e s e n t e d   t o   m y ,   f a i t h -
