HELLO CELMAIL.
Sorry for the tardiness but it was unavoidable. I¹m not even taking time
to read this before sending it. I¹ll get to read it along with the rest of
you later this week. Thanks to Debbi (my better half) for compiling the
newsletter this week.

Hi Steve & fellow cel-mates!
I was wondering is anyone knew if there is a comprehensive resource on
Disney limited editions available? About 5 years ago, I purchased (at
Disney World) a limited edition cel. It features Winnie the Pooh, taken
from scene 400 of "Winnie the pooh and the blustery day", in which pooh and
the whole gang are seated at a long table celebrating the "hero party". I
have search all over the internet, but I can't find any references to this
particular image. It was an LE of 500, but I'm just amazed that no online
retail galleries have it (I was just wondering what the retail value of
this piece was).
I'd be interested in knowing if there are any books/web sites that a) list
all Disney LE's, and b) might give some info as to whether they¹re sold
out, "on alert" or approximate value. thanks for any help/info you might
have.
And thank you Steve for the countless hours you must put into the CELMAIL
project....I've subscribed from quite a while, and although I have not
posted much, I am always delighted to see CELMAIL show up in my inbox!!
The "hobby" will never be in danger so long as their are people like you!
Thanks Again

THE ART OF WARNER BROS. ANIMATION
January 20 through April 1, 2001
Education Gallery and Garden Court Gallery
Warner Brothers became the first cartoon-makers of any kind to be given a
full-scale retrospective by New York's Museum of Modern Art (MOMA).
Organized by the Paris-based Dara Group, Inc., this traveling exhibition is
an enhanced and modified version of the MOMA show touted by Time Magazine
as featuring "...some of the top film artists and pleasure givers of the
past half-century." This educational exhibition, sure to delight the young
and the young at heart, is a comprehensive overview of the legendary
Hollywood animation studio of Warner Bros.
Dear Steve,
I was there as a tourist and wanted to pass this to the members. It was
advertised in a weekly Honolulu magazine.
Yours,
ElizabethMei Wong

I was sorry to see the attack on the moderator regarding his comments on
Ebay about misrepresentation. Animation is constantly misrepresented on
Ebay, to put it in the most favorable light, and those of us that love the
hobby hate to see that because newbies then are afraid to buy because they
don't know what they are getting.
I have a one of a kind cel of Mickey Mouse from the 1935 "On Ice" on an
original Production Background that I will sell for $2000. Of course I
would also sell it for $40 because in fact it is a sericel and the
Background is production but has nothing to do with "ON ICE" Everything I
said in the description was truem yet it is pretty obvious I'm trying to
make you think it is something it is not. That is all Steve was pointing
out as he started taking "bullets" :>) I hope that we can use this site
to exchange information that will make all of us more knowledgeable about
animation and help maintain a hobby of a dying art form.
Ultimately I would love to see posting by older animators passing on the
history to us, as well as information that will make it easier for us to
collect. At the very least I would hope people attack me rather than
Steve because when Steve leaves we have nothing.

EBAY CHATTER:
HEY HEY HEY!!!
Markets are self forming - for years collectors and (dare I say) 'pickers'
"in the know" bought and sold through bilateral agreements, loosely knit
arrangements by phone and word of mouth - eventually meeting at conventions
and clubs.... over the course of time dealers stepped in and arbitraged the
process capitalizing on lack of price transparency and fungibility of
demanded goods... yet markets were very decentralized and a person in Des
Moines couldn't find a something in Fla without the right contacts..... yet
these pockets of demand expanded the diversity of participants -
collectors, investors, cross category collectors, and just mom and pop or
nostalgia buffs....
Then the dawning of EBAY - just like the commodity exchanges in NY and
Chicago - the trade moved off of the street corners and EBAY provided price
transparency, fungibility and unlimited access to a world of participants -
for some goods prices went up as there was easier entry and stimulated
demand (pez) - for others price pressure went down as the small collector
base competed with each other for the cherries and then faded (animation
cels).
Two years ago you could see Jay Ward heavily bid on EBAY - now the same
cels fall flat.. often unbid, but that eye open 50% of cel quisp and quake
will still command top dollar as does the monster cereal cuys with product
on the same cel - the market participants gets educated. Gang, its just
supply and demand - one only needs to look at the Calif electricity market
to see that the incumbents that had an edge - are losing market value to
those with know how in a free market ENRON grows PGE goes bankrupt -
sooooooooo if I want I can buy a 50$ cel on ebay - and also a 1500$ cel
that might have been marked three years ago as 'one of a kind' a Sothebys
at 5000$ - man that's what free markets are about - stop whining find more
creative ways to make a buck if the margins are shrinking and price
transparency and access to DARE I SAY collector to Collector markets are
creating a smarter buyer - and damn if you DO get ripped off - give a
negative rating - write a nasty gram - and post the item on EBAY with the
truth and maybe you will get that bid to cut your losses. OR are you still
arguing why PETS.com stock should be worth 300$ - cause you paid $250. The
21st century is about a commoditized commerce - and this email chain has
some of the smartest TRADERS in the industry. And ebay at times is our wall
street journal or CNBC.
Always looking for older Commercial/Advertising Animation Cels with product
or recognizable Icon.... (at fair ebay prices)
Buy the way you left "Mice Ducks and Wabbits" off of great ebay sellers....
also mark and frumpkin have been fair to me - although they always over
package and matt.

Well Jonathon, you must have really got up his nose as my experience with
Nickel Animation is the exact opposite. Mike made a mistake and sent me
the wrong Flintstone sericel. As soon as he was notified he offered a full
refund. To save the hassle of transporting the cel, and as my wife loved
it anyway, I suggested to Mike that we liked a Ducktales production cel and
as compensation he let us have it for half the advertised price. This was
no problem for him and we duly purchased the Ducktales cel. Now that's
what I call accepting responsibility for your error.
And if you think I'm in anyway connected with Nickel, think again. I live
in Australia and the Nickel purchase was our first on-line transaction.

If you do get ripped off, make the best of the situation. Ask yourself
what you did wrong. It may turn out that you did everything right and
still got taken. It happens! Whatever you do, do not be embarrassed that
you purchased a dud. (It really does happen to all of us.) By all means,
talk about your experience here in Celmail. Perhaps others can point out
something you might have missed, and we can all learn from your experience;
I sincerely doubt anyone will have a laugh at your expense.
There is an incredible store of knowledge in this forum. Use it! Don't be
shy about asking questions and always know what you're buying.

Dear Matt, I am new to cel mail for a variety of reasons, but started
recently to read some of the things people say. I also am a big fan of
Jonathan Ellis.
However, what you said about collecting was brilliant. It made it very
clear for me and I have been collecting for 15 years. I hope more people
heed your words and take knowledge more seriously. Regards

Hey Steven,
These cels you are talking about aren't Star Wars related, are they? I
strictly purchase Droids and Ewoks cels currently and have always been a
bit dubious of purchasing cels a bit due to the possibility of forgeries.
Thanks
Wayne

Hi Wayne.
I don't believe there were any from Star Wars animation. There were a
number of Warner Bros. and a few Disney cels as well as some characters
from Leonardo Productions (Underdog, Tennessee Tuxedo).

IMPORTANT NOTE
Jonathan- I think that you hastily gave ALL4CASH a high
recommendation. My wife just bid on a $300 limited edition cel from
ALL4CASH. We live in San Diego and he sells out of Sherman Oaks. Normal
shipping is the same zone runs around $10 or even $12 by UPS with
insurance. Alan Kleiman (ALL4CASH) sent her an email and indicated that he
wanted to charge a whopping $35 for just the shipping and insurance, an
additional profit of almost $25 over the bid price. I would like all my
CELMAIL recipients to be aware of the absurd fees being charge by
ALL4CASH.
HIGH RECOMMENDATION: GREMLIN Animation- I HAVE HAD A FEW GREAT
TRANSACTIONS WITH Steve AND Debbi G. @ Gremlin Animation. I look forward
to dealing with them in the future.

Thank you for helping to clarify and sift through the sellers of animation

off. I appreciate your candor.

Hello,
I'm currently auctioning,on E-Bay,a 1960's production cel and background
from the original 1960's Jetsons series. The (2) cels are hand inked and
come with a background. I have traced them to the 1963 episode "Rosie's
Boyfriend". I sat through EVERY original series cartoon to find it. Luckily
the series was only on for one year. The cels and background appear to be a
minute or so apart. Both are trimmed to 9 by 11 inches. Matted and framed.
I have the cartoon on tape and will include it at auction's end if the
buyer desires. Here's the link.

HEY COLLECTORS!
This week we are showcasing more fun and unusual animation! Faye from
Cowboy Bebop, Satsuki and Mei from My Neighbor Totoro, Wings of
Honnemaise, some Heavy Metal, a great Pooh, a teensy humans cel from
Planet of the Apes, the boy from The Cat in the Hat and a one of a kind
end title Hanna Barbera cel from Goober and the Ghostchasers! To check
this batch of images out go to the URL below!
http://members.aol.com:/arttoonsart/CM31201
Or to see a specific image cut and paste the address after the description!
Here's some anime to check out! (American following it, keep reading!)
FAYE drawing from COWBOY BEBOP. Terrific head and shoulders 9x9.5 image
fills the paper! This title is a big favorite now! $35
http://members.aol.com:/arttoonsart/CM31201/A862JA2faye2.jpg
WINGS OF HONNEMAISE drawing of the Christian lady's daughter. This unusual
film from the early 1990's is well respected by anime fans - art from it is
nearly never seen. Waist-up 7x6.5 upbeat image. Here's a great chance! $50
http://members.aol.com:/arttoonsart/CM31201/A758JAhonne1.jpg
SATSUKI, MEI AND NEIGHBOR BOY cel from MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO. Presented on a
color copy background from the movie but not matching. They are all
walking along, Mei has the ear of corn in her arms and is facing away.
Although all are knees-up (5.5x6), Mei does have her one foot up and you
get a glimpse of that cute little sandal, back of her dress and pony
tails! $325
http://members.aol.com:/arttoonsart/CM31201/30MZ3satsukimei3.jpg
A personal note about MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO: IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THIS MOVIE,
RUN TO YOUR VIDEO STORE AND RENT OR BUY IT. I am in love with this movie -
it has a simple charm and whimsy that is absent from nearly all new
productions. You don't have to have any interest in other Japanese
cartoons - it stands alone. And then if you like it, see Kiki's Delivery
Service, by the same person, Hayao Miyazaki. This is from a lover of
cartoons point of view. From an art collecting point of view I have to
warn you - DON'T HATE ME FOR MAKING YOU SEE THIS MOVIE AND THEN WANTING
ART FROM IT THAT CAN'T BE FOUND. Miyazaki art is getting very hard to
find from any title and is generally on par with classic Disney as far as
prices are concerned. Still, good animation should experienced and
enjoyed!
And now for the American art this week!
PROFESSOR ANRAK and REPORTERS cel from HEAVY METAL, 1981 (So Beautiful, So
Dangerous segment.) He coldly pushes his way through a crowd of reporters
(outside the Pentagon.) Knees-up 9x12 image. There is some yellowed tape
along the bottom above the production codes - you can see it on the scan.
This scene is a great frame with attitude and motion! $85
http://members.aol.com:/arttoonsart/CM31201/411HM5anrak5.jpg
TAARNA (looking up and away from us, hips-up) and BARBARIAN LEADER on his
FLYING GARGOYLISH PREHISTORIC BIRD (both full figure) from HEAVY METAL,
1981. Overall image size 8x12.5. We just got this one for sale. I can
find a good color copy background to go with this if you'd like! $285
http://members.aol.com:/arttoonsart/CM31201/EPtaarnabarb1.jpg
BILL HUDSON AND 10 HUMAN SLAVES ON A RAFT cel from RETURN TO THE PLANET OF
THE APES cartoon. This image also has some water effects around the raft.
You also ought to know that the acetate is large. Small (2x3.5) but
cheap! $30 http://members.aol.com:/arttoonsart/CM31201/AT667raft1.jpg
BOY cel from THE CAT IN THE HAT, 1971. Presented on a hand-prepared
background and cel overlay (done by someone in the industry we are friends
with.) From the outrageous, out-of-hand "he's a cat of many countries,
he's a cat of many hats" CAT, HAT sequence with a crazy red and white
background and hats spilling everywhere (remember, done to go with the
cel.) The boy (he is never named as far as I know, the books are from
his point of view) is 5.5x3, eyes closed, partially covered by hats
overlay. You've got to have a look! I LOVE IT! $185
http://members.aol.com:/arttoonsart/CM31201/334DPboy1.jpg
WINNIE THE POOH trimmed cel (11x12.5 from an original 16 field size) from
...HONEY TREE, 1966. Presented on a hand-prepared background (done by a
friend in the industry.) Pooh is a small full figure (2.5x2) happily
bouncing along the POOH BE... letters. This is a special one! $475
http://members.aol.com:/arttoonsart/CM31201/492WDPpooh1.jpg
GOOBER AND THE GHOST CHASERS END TITLE CEL, 1973. In yellow letters A
HANNA-BARBERA PRODUCTION copyright 1973, with a great RCA logo and really
tiny group shot of the characters and the title - check out the detail!
Overall image size of title 5x7, very smartly double matted. THIS IS A ONE
OF A KIND!!!! $385
http://members.aol.com:/arttoonsart/CM31201/547HBPgoober1.jpg
If you have any questions about the above pieces, just ask anytime! If
you'd like a catalog let us know and we'll mail you one (we'll need your
mailing address.) THANKS SO MUCH for having a look at this posting!
HAVE A GREAT WEEK, CAN'T WAIT TO HEAR FROM YOU!
