Thank you for your interest in the ALIM Summer Counselor Position.
The ALIM Summer Program is a retreat lasting approximately one month, dedicated to increasing the literacy of Muslims about their Deen. We have, alhamdulillah, excellent scholars, and a history of amazing participants and helpers that make this program a wonderful success by Allah's Will and Mercy. This year, the program is going to run from July 9, 2016 through July 31, 2016. The participants are engaged in lectures, workshops, and practical activities to help attain this goal. The days are full, with time for instruction, recreation, salah, halaqas, and other activities.
The ALIM summer program has, alhamdulillah, been successful since its inception in 1999. An integral part of the program lies with the two ALIM counselors, who remain on-site for the duration of the program. Their contributions are invaluable. The main responsibility of each counselor involves maintaining the flow of the retreat. Initially, this will include helping students feel comfortable with the program and the new environment. Introducing the rules and expectations at the beginning will set the tone for the rest of the retreat. Once the program is well underway, maintaining flow involves encouraging and ensuring students are arriving to prayer and class on time, communication with the ALIM organizers about needs or suggestions, and encouraging growth and learning of participants outside the classroom. This last point greatly influences the experience the participants leave with. Fostering and organizing recreation activities, tahajjud prayers, or just taking the time to talk and discuss with the participants are some of the ways this may be done. Also, while the scholars teaching in the program are the primary Islamic authoritative figures at the conference, in years past many students have turned to the counselors for clarification and guidance. This is a great learning opportunity for the counselors as well with the numerous dynamic instructors and the participants who each provide so much for anyone involved in the program to benefit from.
Below is a partial list of what is expected of the counselors:

  Coordinate and conduct the move-in process.

  Revise, explain and enforce the rules of the retreat.

  Structure recreation (sharing of facilities by brothers and sisters).
  
• 
  Ensure the facilities are setup for the various activities.
  
• 
  Ensure that food is not wasted nor are participants going hungry.
  
• 
  Maintain order among participants
  
• 
  Work towards being examples of strong Muslim character
  
• 
  Facilitate bonding among the participants
  
• 
  Make logistical adjustments as necessary
  
• 
  Update organizers on progress of retreat.
