Scientific Conference entitled
Nikolay Karamzin and his times

Place and time: Warsaw, 19-20 May 2016
Languages: Polish, Russian, English
Main objectives:

In-depth reflection on the legacy of Nikolay Karamzin and its reception in different epochs and different European countries, as well as retracement – using innovative methodological approaches and casting light on unknown and poorly researched phenomena – the specificity of literary, cultural and socio-political life in Russia in the second half of the eighteenth and early decades of the nineteenth centuries.


The conference is part of the celebration of Nikolay Karamzin’s 250th birth anniversary and his 190th death anniversary, as well as of the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the University of Warsaw, where the research on this Russian writer and historian has a long tradition.
Groups of topics:

I. Nikolay Karamzin - the man and his work.

  1. His prose and poetry in the context of the literary trends of the epoch.

  2. The initiatives in the field of publishing.

  3. Karamzin and the problems of language and style.

  4. History of the Russian state - its text and contexts. Karamzin and European historiography.

  5. Karamzin in his own eyes as well as those of his contemporary and posterior generations.

  6. The legacy of Karamzin’s research workshop – interpretations and re-interpretations.

  7. Karamzin’s works in the hands of a translator.

  8. Karamzin’s legacy in the library and museum collections.

II. Russia in the times of Nikolay Karamzin.

   1. Philosophical and aesthetic views.

   2. Literary practice from the problem-thematic and genological perspective - tradition and innovation. Known and unknown writers and their known and unknown works.

   3. The process of institutionalization of the literary and cultural life.

   4. Socio-political background. Activists and their achievements. The ideology of Conservatism in Russia and in Europe.

   5. Russia at the turn of 18th and 19th centuries versus Western Europe. Russian Europeans.


We plan to publish a peer-reviewed monograph adhering to current publishing standards.

The Organising Committee reserves the right to select the submissions to be included in the program.
The cost of taking part in the conference (travel expenses, accommodation, meals) shall be borne by participants.

The conference fee is 400 zlotys (for Polish citizens) or €100 (for foreigners).

The fee should be paid within two weeks (14 working days) of the paper being accepted by the Organising Committee. Please make your payment to the following bank account: Millenium S.A.
