PDI – Actors and Transactions
CDROM Structure
The CD will have a human-readable identification on the outside of the physical medium. This should include: - Patient Name
- Media Creation Date
- Name of the Originating Institution
- Indication of the type of content: “DICOM ONLY” or “DICOM PLUS WEB”
CDROM Rules- DICOM Content Actors interchanging DICOM information will use the STD-GEN-CD Media Storage Application Profile. Non-DICOM content will not be placed in the DICOM Directory. All DICOM file names are limited to 8 characters (no extensions), uppercase letters, digits and underscore only.
CDROM Rules - Web Content IHE_PDI web content corresponds exclusively to the DICOM content, although it need not represent the entire DICOM content. Non-web content will not be placed in IHE_PDI directories. Web content use of XHTML and JPEG formats is restricted to ensure interoperability. All file names are restricted to the ISO 9660 8.3 file name. E.g. “support_for_my_app.dll” would need to be “SUPPORT.DLL” or some other 8.3 name.
CDROM Rules - Other Content Other content will not be placed in DICOM or IHE_PDI directories, but may be placed in other locations on the CDROM. Do not assume that an application on the media will automatically be launched. IHE recommends that media readers not automatically run software on the media. All file names are restricted to the ISO 9660 8.3 file name. E.g. “support_for_my_app.dll” would need to be “SUPPORT.DLL” or some other 8.3 name.
All PDI reading actors Shall indicate to the user when they find DICOM instances that are not supported by the reader. It is recommended that viewers not automatically run software found on the media (for security reasons).
PDI Importer (Reader) Rules Portable Media Importer is required to have facilities to accommodate updating patient information to use values for the receiving enterprise, e.g. update patient ID. Portable Media Importer shall be grouped with at least one of the following actors: - Evidence Creator
- Acquisition Modality
- Image Manager/Image Archive
- Report Creator
- Report Manager
- Report Repository
Common Issues - CD File Structure Failure to write ISO 9660 Level 1 CDs. - Media cannot be written using the Joliet file system
- Media cannot include Rock Ridge extensions

Common Issues - CD File Naming Conventions File naming conventions apply to all files on the CD including: - DICOM File Names
- Non-DICOM File Names
- DICOM Viewer Application Name
- The name of DLLs present on the CD
Common Issue - DICOMDIR Requirements DICOMDIR must be valid. Watch for - wrong VR for attributes
- bad lengths in elements
- bad offset calculations in DICOMDIR
All DICOM Images must use EVRLE encoding. - No Image Compression is permitted.
Common Issues - Format of readme.txt and index.htm Carefully follow the guidelines of the Technical Framework with regards to the README.TXT and INDEX.HTM files.
