EXTENDED ABSTRACT 
Nowadays, industrial fields and structures which have been in this area have become an impor-
tant topic of discussion about refunction of structures. However, the cause of preserving this 
structure and the criteria that used in determining the new function of structures are ignored. 
Thus, the process of identifying new function of industrial structures random and incorrect 
function is included in the city. This event causes the meaning of loss of city. In order to solve 
this problem, industrial area in the history, the impact of the cities and communities, the new 
meanings with refunction are required analysis carefully. In terms of the process of the formati-
on of sustainable cities, this analysis is important extremely. 
Aim: In this study, new functions 
suggested for the model industrial structures, Bursa Merinos Cultural Centre and Park, have 
been analyzed and whether the same functions let the urban memory and identity survive has 
been determined. 
Method: The topic of the study will be elucidated by using written sources, 
internet database and the information taken by state institutions such as Bursa Metropolitan Mu-
nicipality.  Furthermore, visual elements such as photos and graphics will be used. The Bursa 
Metropolitan Municipality has undertaken to give the building and its environs new functions 
that meet the contemporary social and cultural needs of the growing city. As Merinos Factory 
Building and Park are located at a spot that could be regarded as the center of Bursa City, due 
to its close location to Osmangazi Municipality and Bursa Atatürk Stadium, it has been deemed 
suitable to become a new Culture Center to respond today’s cultural and social needs of Bursa 
community. 
Findings: This project consists of three main titles, which are arrangement of Me-
rinos Park, refunctioning of Merinos Factory as a Culture Center and design of an Atatürk Ope-
ra Building and Concert Hall (Bozkurt, 2015). Indoors have been equipped with technologies 
observing functional requirements and through ensuring a modular dimensional coordination, 
an approach that prioritizes industrialized construction rather than traditional construction has 
been adopted (Forum Yapısal Net, 2015). Today, there are a lot of industry structures that were 
abandoned and lost the function in the city centre. Protecting and maintaining of these industrial 
structures constitute significance in terms of alive the urban memory and identity and moving 
technical information into the future. Also, reuses the structure aim to the economic, social 
and environmental targets due to the effect of industry and city within the sustainable urban 
development. 
Recommendations: The process of refunction of industrial structure takes shape 
with examining the value of the region’s social and cultural structure. The recommendations
