Practice of the peer support programme in a junior high school in a school wide style – It used in period for integrated study for first and second grader -

To explore how whole school approach of peer support give impacts on emotional and behavioural developments in junior high school.

Type of Peer Support

After the training, all the pupils visited the nursery school and nursing home for doing support activities. The activities were recreational activities, group game, cooking and sport activities.

Samples

651 pupils from the school with peer support programmes (343 male, 308 female)

683 pupils from the school without peer support programme

(345 male, 338 female).


Method

The self report assessments ware conducted about pupils’ mental and behavioural developments.

The study employed ANOVA.



Findings

The study found that there were significant differences in 4 subscales (i.e. self-efficacy, pro-social behaviours, self–approval, and inferiority complex) between before and after the peer support activities, which means that peer supporters significantly improved these four behavioural and mental aspects. However, there were no significant differences in other 6 subscales (e.g. friendship skills, infringement, goodness, normative consciousness, self-esteem, satisfaction in school).

Findings

The training of peer mediation was hard session for some elementary pupils,, therefore the trainer carefully run the training. A large number of junior high school pupils (77%) mentioned peer mediation essential activities in elementary school.

The study employed ANOVA.



Findings

The study found that the improvement of planning and supervision give positive impacts on “wiliness to give support to others” and “to understand other feelings”, then these seems to also bring positive impacts on “support from teacher”, “support from other children (peers)” and “prosocial skills”.

However in the panning, since some pupils set lower-level goals, they could not five appropriate support to users.

Findings

The study found that after the peer support trainings, children increased their social skills, especially both score of “caring skills” and “keeping good relation” significantly increased after the training.
