The island of Steepholm continues the line of the Mendips, a chain of hills that meets the coast at Brean Down, Somerset.  Eastwards, the
shores of the Severn Estuary are dominated by tidal flats, saltmarshes and the extensive wet grasslands of the Gwent and Somerset Levels;
to the west, cliffs characterise much of the coast.  The whole estuary is of the highest importance for wildlife, especially waterfowl, reflected
in its protection under numerous national and international conservation provisions.  Photo: Peter Wakely, English Nature.
