Job Purpose:
To work intensively with the new North Somerset Enterprise College and selected primary and secondary schools in Weston-super-Mare to increase the number of pupils and their families cycling, walking and making use of public transport on the journey to and from school or college.
Dimensions of job:
Moving from primary school to secondary school or secondary school to college are key transitions, when young people gain more independence and the postholder will co-ordinate a programme of work to give the skills, knowledge and confidence to motivate people to travel sustainably for their everyday journeys.
The postholder will be working face to face with 8-19 year old pupils and students, teachers, parents and at a corporate level in a front facing field role. The post will involve producing and using educational resources as part of the curriculum.
The postholder will be working with North Somerset Council, North Somerset Enterprise Technology College and a number of primary and secondary schools in Weston-super-Mare to deliver an agreed programme of work.
Place in organisational structure:
The post holder will be line managed by the Smarter Choices Coordinator for the West of England and report operationally to the Sustainable Travel and Road Safety Manager in North Somerset Council. The post holder will have close working with North Somerset Council on a day to day basis.

Local authority staff involved in delivery of the Local Sustainable Transport Fund programme with specific reference to the Sustainable Travel and Road Safety team, Public Transport and Home to School Transport Teams.
Supporting NSC Teams including those involved with Sports and Healthy Lifestyles and the Schools Sports Partnership.
The PCT, and other national and local walking and cycling groups/ organisations.
Key Responsibilities:

To support pupils, parents and carers in identified schools to increase levels of walking, cycling and public transport on journeys to and from the school.

To promote safe, sustainable travel to school staff, and foster their support for the delivery of curriculum and extra-curriculum activities

To reduce the number of car trips to school, especially for shorter journeys

To promote the Local Authority’s Road Safety programme to enable more pupils to travel to the college independently

To develop and deliver a programme of activities relevant to the college, using practical and classroom sessions, focusing on all modes of sustainable transport, enabling and embedding active travel choices (the college has a science, technology, engineering and mathematics focus for 14-19 year olds)

To promote active and sustainable travel through the delivery of school-based activities, events and training, making use of all available resources so as to ensure the sustainability and effectiveness of the programme.

To provide advice, information and co-ordinate training activities for ‘school champions’ – who include pupils, staff, parents, governors and volunteers.

To enhance links between schools and other existing local community support for active and sustainable travel.

To share good practice with other schools in the area through presentations, workshops and press articles.

To compile progress reports and provide other evidence for project stakeholders as required.

To monitor the effective use of locally held budgets for purchasing resources, support materials and other services.

To work in accordance with the arrangements described in the organisation's health and safety management system including any project or department specific requirements.

To carry out other duties as required.
Working Conditions:
The post-holder will be based either at North Somerset Enterprise Technology College or at North Somerset Council (tbc). Occasional overnight stays away from home, weekend and late working may be required.
The post holder should be prepared to walk, cycle and/or use public transport where practical for daily work journeys.
Employment will be conditional on clearance by an Enhanced DBS Disclosure check.
