Job Title: Active Travel to Schools Officer, BANES
Reference: SUS1404
Salary: Grade F: £21,321 - £23,864 pro rata per annum

(dependent on relevant skills and experience)


Hours: 18.75 hours per week
Fixed Term: contract to 31 March 2016
Base: Bath and North East Somerset Council offices, Riverside Office, Keynsham
Job Purpose:

To promote sustainable and active travel in schools during the LSTF project as part of a package of measures to increase the number of pupils and their families cycling, walking and making use of public transport on the journey to and from school and for the purposes of transition to secondary school.


Dimensions of job:

The post holder will be working jointly with a team on this project to deliver an agreed programme of works to primary and secondary schools.


Place in organisational structure:

The post holder will report to the Smarter Choices Co-ordinator, South West and will work closely with the LSTF project manager (or Transitions Co-ordinator) for the West of England. They will also work in close liaison with the Cycling Development Officer in Bath and North East Somerset Council, as well as other teams within the Council, Sustrans regional staff and Sustrans Education and Young People (EYP) team.

Local authority staff involved in delivery of the Local Sustainable Transport Fund programme with specific reference to the road safety and cycle training teams.

Other national and local walking and cycling groups/ organisations.


Key Responsibilities:

  1. To promote active and sustainable travel through the delivery of school-based activities, events and training, making use of all available resources so as to ensure the sustainability and effectiveness of the programme.

  2. To measure baseline travel behaviour and carry out follow up surveys at participating schools and complete other monitoring tasks required of the post.

  3. To provide support for all agencies involved in the delivery of the Local Sustainable Transport Fund package, such as in the consultation, planning and delivery of infrastructure improvements.

  4. To provide advice, information and co-ordinate training activities for ‘school champions’ – who include pupils, staff, parents, governors and volunteers.

  5. To develop links between schools and other existing local community support for active and sustainable travel.

  6. To share good practice with other schools in the area through presentations, workshops and press articles.

  7. To compile progress reports and provide other evidence for project stakeholders as required.

  8. To manage the effective use of locally held budgets for purchasing resources, support materials and other services.

  9. To support and comply with the organisation's policy for the management of health and safety.

  10. To work in accordance with the arrangements described in the organisation's health and safety management system including any project or department specific requirements.

  11. To carry out other duties as required.


Working Conditions:

The post holder will be located within Bath and North East Somerset Council, LSTF, Transport Planning Team in Keynsham. Occasional overnight stays away from home, weekend and late working may be required.


The post holder will be prepared to walk, cycle and/or use public transport for the majority of daily work journeys.
Employment will be conditional on clearance by an Enhanced DBS Disclosure check.
