Job Title: BSc Industrial Year Placement

Reports to: Professor Steven GE Marsh, Director of Bioinformatics & Deputy Director of Research (Head of HLA Informatics Group)

Location: Anthony Nolan Research Institute (ANRI), London
Main Responsibilities:
The individual will work as part of a small team on the Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (HSCT) Patient and Donor collection and characterisation project. In addition they will be responsible for the maintenance of the large collection of EBV transformed cell lines available at ANRI.
They will be expected to co-ordinate the collection of patient and donor blood samples and liaise with clinics where the samples are being taken. They will undertake the preparation of sample collection bottles and sending sample collection packs to clinics. They will be responsible for the daily collection, sterile separation of lymphocytes and their storage in liquid nitrogen of the patient and donor samples. They will be required to enter and maintain the clinical data relevant to the donor and patients on a computer-based database, currently held in Filemaker Pro on an Apple Macintosh computer.
They will be expected to participate in the characterisation of different genetic markers of the donor and patient samples, by various DNA-based techniques including sequencing.
They will be required to perform EBV transformation of peripheral B-lymphocytes and to culture and maintain stocks of these and other cell lines. This will involve both culture cells from either fresh or frozen stocks. They will also be required to ensure that adequate stocks of frozen cell lines are maintained frozen in liquid nitrogen and to update the sample storage database. To grow cell lines and prepare DNA from both blood samples and from EBV cultured cell lines.
Opportunities may arise to be involved in some laboratory-based projects undertaking the sequencing of HLA or KIR alleles. Any other reasonable duties as required.
The individual will be expected to plan and organise their work schedule and report to the head of the group on a weekly basis. They will also be expected to give oral presentations of their work in progress meetings with the ANRI and Royal Free Hospital.

Person Specifications:


  1. Should be studying for a Degree in a Biological Science (BSc)

  2. Be available for a 12 month contract

  3. Completion of BSc modules in Genetics, Molecular Biology and/or Immunology would be advantageous

  4. Demonstrate good time management skills

  5. Good organisational skills including the ability to cope with large work loads

  6. An ability to show meticulous attention to detail

  7. Able to be punctual and reliable

  8. A good working knowledge of Microsoft Office would be beneficial

  9. Previous laboratory experience would be advantageous but not compulsory
