The history of the Black Belt forms of Tae Kwon Do
Ko-Ryo “Korea” (30 movements.) The word “Korea” derives from Ko-Ryo, the name of the ancient dynasty (A.D. 918-1392). The Ko-Ryo men were people of strong convictions and will, which they demonstrated in battle. They persistently resisted the aggressions of the Mongolians who were sweeping the world at the time. Their firm resolution and intrepid spirit, born of wisdom rather than brute strength or numbers, earned them the title “Men of Conviction.”
The form Ko-Ryo can be a way of cultivating the strength that arises from firm conviction. With every motion you must demonstrate confidence and strong will.
Keum-Gang “Diamond” (27 Movements.) The diamond is the hardest substance known to man. It can also rpresent perfection and clarity. The flawless diamond is of great value. It is also a symbol of beauty and because of the meaning, the Korean people named the most beautiful mountain range in the Korean peninsula Keumg-Gang-San. The theme of the diamond’s strength carries into Buddhism where that which can break off every agony of mind with the combination of wisdom and virtue is called Keum-Gang.
The form Keum-Gang moves to outline the Chinese character for mountain. You movements in this form must be based on a spiritual strength that is beautiful in its perfection as the Diamond Mountains and is as hard and adamant as the diamond, strong enough to cut off all distractions.
Taebaek “Mountain” (26 Movement.) The mythological story about the founding of Korea says that about 4300 years ago, the legendary Dangoon began the nation in Taebaek, which is currently Mount Baekdoo. This is the loftiest mountain in Korea and is thus held sacred. As the mountain reaches towards the sun, the word taebaek has also grown to mean light and Mount Baekdoo is regarded as the symbol of Korea.
In the form Taebaek you must demonstrate the rigor and determined will of the Korean people by displaying the respect due a scared object. It must also be performed with the precision and agility of light.
