Labor Democrats, O‘ahu County Monthly Meeting

Thursday, July 14, 2005, 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.


SUMMARY



  1. Introductions: Angie Chinen, Glenn Ida, Dwight Ishiguro, Calvin Konno, Michael J. Largarticha, Joy Kobashigawa Lewis, Sam Mitchell, Maurice Morita, Bill Puette, Mark Shumar, Julie Teruya, Faith Tomoyasa, and Jimmy Toyama

2. Special Session Legislative Report and Discussion – Handout passed out



  • Mark Shumar, IBT Legislative Representative, said that California has anti-labor initiatives for the voters to choose – similar to Proposition 226 regarding paycheck protection (actually deception)

3. Discussion - Draft Labor Democrats of Hawai‘i Charter – Blue Copy



  • Creates an autonomous state organization that links all counties together

  • IBT Mark Shumar also explained that there is a National Caucus of State Legislators (NCSL) and is an autonomous national organization where there is a national labor caucus within the organization that legislators nationwide are involved in.

  • The Labor Democrats ARE NOT THE LABOR CAUCUS of the Hawaii Democratic Party – some members of the Labor Democrats are also those who signed the initial charter of the Labor Caucus. Each county can form their own Labor Democrat Group, and their members can be also be part of the Labor Caucus at the State Level.




  1. Discussion - Draft Labor Democrats of Hawai‘i, O‘ahu Chapter Sub Charter – Blue Copy

  • Creates an autonomous county organization that is outside of Oahu County




  1. Discussion - Draft Labor Democrats Committee Charter – White Copy

  • Maintains connection with Oahu County and involvement within county

  • Amended to include changes to Charter – became goldenrod copy

  • Motion made by Sam Mitchell and Seconded by Michael J. Largarticha to adopt goldenrod Committee Charter with unanimous consent




  1. Oahu County Committee Democratic Party Report – Jimmy Toyama

-Japanese Cultural Center - $50 per person

-Notice coming out next week

-Honorees: Senator Akaka, introduced by Allen Hoe, Pinky Thompson, introduced by Masaro Oshiro, and Sister Correa, introduced by Judge Heen

-Keynote Speaker: Rev. McPhearson from Church of the Crossroads to speak on the intersection of religion & politics



  • September 17, 2005 – Leadership Advance at Kapolei Intermediate at TBD time

  • October 8 & 9, 2005 – Centennial Celebration at UH Campus Center

-8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on October 8 with a social to follow

-8:30 a.m. to 12 noon on October 9



-Labor Democrats to help with discussion of three goals: Core Values of Democrats, Long Term Objectives, and Projects to get to Long Term Objectives
