GEOID99 for SKI & SKI-Pro

GEOID99 from NGS

for SKI & SKI-Pro

November, 1999

Leica Geosystems Incorporated

1. INTRODUCTION:
The Geoid99 model can be used in SKI and SKI-Pro for geoid undulation calculations based on WGS-84 Latitudes and Longitudes. The Geoid99 option consists of a single program, named GEOID99.EXE, with one or more grid coefficient file(s), named g1999*.bin, corresponding to different areas of continental USA (CONUS), Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto-Rico and Virgin Islands territories. Position limits of the 8 CONUS, 4 Alaska, 1 Hawaii and 1 Puerto-Rico/Virgin Islands areas are listed below:
g1999u01.bin GEOID99 grid #1 for CONUS (40-58N, 111-130W)

g1999u02.bin GEOID99 grid #2 for CONUS (40-58N, 094-113W)

g1999u03.bin GEOID99 grid #3 for CONUS (40-58N, 077-096W)

g1999u04.bin GEOID99 grid #4 for CONUS (40-58N, 060-079W)

g1999u05.bin GEOID99 grid #5 for CONUS (24-42N, 111-130W)

g1999u06.bin GEOID99 grid #6 for CONUS (24-42N, 094-113W)

g1999u07.bin GEOID99 grid #7 for CONUS (24-42N, 077-096W)

g1999u08.bin GEOID99 grid #8 for CONUS (24-42N, 060-079W)

g1999a01.bin GEOID99 grid #1 for Alaska (60-72N, 156-188W)

g1999a02.bin GEOID99 grid #2 for Alaska (60-72N, 126-158W)

g1999a03.bin GEOID99 grid #3 for Alaska (49-61N, 156-188W)

g1999a04.bin GEOID99 grid #4 for Alaska (49-61N, 126-158W)

g1999h01.bin GEOID99 grid #1 for Hawaii (18-24N, 154-161W)

g1999p01.bin GEOID99 grid #1 for P-R/VI (15-21N, 064-069W)

It is under the user’s responsibility to obtain the right number and the adequate Geoid99 Grid coefficient (g1999*.bin) file(s) for the required territory(ies). A maximum of 14 Grid coefficient files can be opened by the program. It is expected that some of the Geoid99 grid coefficient files will be updated from time to time. Additional information about Geoid99 model can be found in the g1999rme.txt file contained in GEOID99.ZIP.

2. INSTALLATION and OPERATION in SKI Datum/Map:
Decompress (pkunzip) GEOID99.ZIP file in the \SKI\WORK subdirectory. The GEOID99.ZIP file should contain the following files: GEOID99.EXE, GEOID99.DOC & G1999RME.TXT. Decompress and/or copy one or more Geoid99 Grid Coefficient (g1999*.bin) files as received from either your LEICA representative or NGS in the \SKI\WORK subdirectory. Make sure that there is at least ONE Grid Coefficient file (g1999*.bin) in that same subdirectory corresponding to your area.
Set up SKI for GEOID99 undulation calculations by adding ONLY ONE new GEOID Model to the Geoidal Models list in SKI Datum/Map module under Import/Export, Geoidal Models pull down menu. Insert appropriate information in the parameter table as shown in the following Display Panel 1.

Display Panel 1: Definition of GEOID 99 Model in SKI Datum/Map.

The Geoid99 calculations are initiated by editing a coordinate set in SKI Datum/Map module under Import/Export, Coordinate Sets pull down menu. The reference ellipsoid must be WGS-84 and the coordinates have to be converted in Geodetic units prior to selecting the Geoid Model Name (GEOID99 USA). The program is started by selecting Orth. Hght as shown in the following Display Panel 2.
If one of the point coordinate falls outside of any given grid limits, an error message will be displayed and only the geoid undulations within +/-99.999 m will be reported. Please make sure that the GEOID99.EXE and any grid coefficient file(s) (g1999*.bin) are in the SKI\WORK subdirectory and the ‘Start in’ subdirectory of the SKI program is set for \SKI\WORK on your current drive as per SKI Shortcut properties. All calculations are executed in the \SKI\WORK subdirectory using the INPUT & OUTPUT.USR files created by SKI Datum/Map and GEOID99.EXE respectively. Results are stored in the OUTPUT.USR file at the end of the GEOID99 program execution and are read by the SKI Datum/Map module.

3. INSTALLATION and OPERATION in SKI-Pro:
Decompress (pkunzip) GEOID99.ZIP file in any subdirectory existing on the current drive where SKI-Pro resides (\SKI-Pro\Geoids as example). The GEOID99.ZIP file should contain the following files: GEOID99.EXE, GEOID99.DOC & G1999RME.TXT. Decompress and/or copy one or more Geoid99 Grid Coefficient (g1999*.bin) files as received from either your LEICA representative or NGS in the same subdirectory where GEOID99.EXE file resides (SKI-Pro\Geoid as example). Make sure that there is at least ONE Grid Coefficient file (g1999*.bin) in that same subdirectory corresponding to your area.
Set up SKI-Pro for GEOID99 undulation calculations by creating ONLY ONE new GEOID Model to the Geoid Models folder in SKI-Pro Coordinate Systems. Insert appropriate information in the parameter table as shown in the following Display Panel 3.

Display Panel 3: Definition of GEOID99 Model in SKI-Pro Coordinate Systems.

The Geoid99 Model must be assigned to either a new or an existing Coordinate System using WGS-84 as reference ellipsoid as per the following Display Panel 4.

Display Panel 4: Assignment of GEOID99 Model to a Coordinate System in SKI-Pro.

Once the Geoid99 Model is attached to a Coordinate System, the Geoid99 undulation calculations must be conducted in a Project opened with the appropriate Coordinate System. Geoid undulation calculations are initiated by selecting Compute Geoid Separations from the Tools pull down menu as shown on Display Panel 5.

Display Panel 5: Calculation of GEOID99 undulations in a SKI-Pro Project.

A confirmation of the Geoid Calculations is presented with Orthometric Heights and Geoid Undulations for each point coordinates as per Display Panel 6.

If one of the point coordinate falls outside any given grid limits, a geoid undulation value of 999.999 m will be reported which indicates wrong coordinate inputs. Please make sure that the GEOID99.EXE and the correct grid coefficient file(s) (g1999*.bin) are in the Geoid subdirectory. All calculations are executed in the specified Geoid subdirectory using INPUT & OUTPUT.USR files temporarily created by SKI-Pro and GEOID99.EXE. The INPUT and OUTPUT.USR files are removed from the Geoid subdirectory at the end of the GEOID99 program execution. Results are then presented in the current Project.
