New Business:
Barry Holland – CryptoLocker - Nasty malware (malicious software)

Once infected, CryptoLocker gives you a choice - pay, or lose files you have Not Backed Up.

If you pay, its' not known who is receiving the money, it could be someone getting rich, or it could be a Terrorist group. Most Experts recommend NOT paying.

CryptoLocker targets Microsoft Windows operating system, spread as an email attachment. It may seem to be a legitimate source. May be spread through ZeuS botnet.

Once installed in your computer, it encrypts all documents stored on your local computer, also ones stored on mapped network drives and mounted removable storage. CryptoLocker will ask for cash- i.e. two bitcoins (worth almost US $380) or $300 in MonkeyPak or Ukash prepaid cards. If you don't pay within 3 days the decryption key is deleted & you lose access to your files forever. CryptoLocker places a Clock on your screen, counting down.
What can YOU do:- American Security Expert – Nick Shaw created software called

Crypto-Prevent (free) http://www.foolishit.com/vb6-projects/cryptoprevent/

This will apply a number of settings to your installations of Windows to prevent CryptoLocker from executing & has been proven to work on Windows XP and Windows 7
Check your emails – to see if they are suspicious BEFORE you open up email attachments.
Were you expecting correspondence from them?
Is the spelling, grammar what you'd expect from the sender?
Does the email address match up with the sender?
Proper Backup: Make regular backups isolated from your computer.

Networked backup solutions will not work, these can be encrypted.

Use an external hard drive / memory stick, and remove when finished backing up.
Last reported, there have been approx. 250,000 reported attacks.
Better Business Bureau: BBB Tip of the Week: Beware the digital hijacker
