Some interesting contributions Scientists did in discovering the cell, they are:

  1. Matthias Schleiden is a scientist, researcher who studied the composition of plant cells or structure with the use of a microscope. In 1838, he wrote “Contributions to Phytogensis”, where he stated that cells composed different parts of the plant organism. He also recognized the importance of the cell nucleus and identified its union with cell division.

  2. Theodor Schwann was a German physiologist, his contributions to the development of cell theory are concluded that all animals are made from cells. He also responsible in other the discoveries such as the discovery of Schwann cells in the nervous system, pepsin( an enzyme that digests protein in the stomach), the organic nature of yeast, and invented the term metabolism.

  3. Rudolf Virchow was often referred to as the ‘Father of Pathology’; he concluded that all cells are made by existing cells. He also proposed that to form new cells you required the existing cells to divide.

  4. Theodor Svedberg is a Swedish chemist who came up with the Svedberg units (S) for the ribosomal subunits. He also pioneered the use of ultracentrifugation to investigate the properties of macromolecules.
