Preface from Chairperson, AKM 

The creation of the Mauritian Kreol Academy in October 2010 represents an important historical stage 

in the process of recognition, development and promotion of our country’s language. In accordance 

with its terms of reference as established by Government, the Mauritian Kreol Academy will advise 

on the: 

•

 

Standardization of Mauritian Kreol including pronunciation, syntax and grammar; 

•

 

Validation of the writing system; 

•

 

Provision of necessary technical guidelines for the development of curriculum materials and 

training to teachers; and 

•

 

Promotion and development of the language. 

The launching of the Mauritian Kreol Academy on 27 October 2010 by the Minister of Education and 

Human Resources, Hon. Dr Vasant Bunwaree, was followed by the first meeting of the Academy during 

which technical committees were set up to work on the objectives assigned to the Academy as per its 

terms of reference. 

The Technical Committee on validation of Mauritian Kreol Orthography, chaired by Dr Arnaud 

Carpooran, submitted its first document to the Academy for discussion at its 2

nd

 meeting held on 10 

November 2010. This was followed by a special meeting of the Academy on 21 December 2010 during 

which Dr Carpooran presented the final draft document on Mauritian Kreol Orthography. Members 

present expressed their appreciation of the work done by the Committee. 

On behalf of the Mauritian Kreol Academy, I am pleased to present the final document on the 

orthography of Mauritian Kreol written by Dr Carpooran as chairperson of the Technical Committee. It 

is worth keeping in mind that this document is also the outcome of the considerable work done since the 

late 1960s and which produced several standardized writing systems for Mauritian Kreol until recently. 

Then, in 2004, a first government initiative on this issue led to the setting up of a UoM-MIE committee 

under my responsibility in view of harmonizing these various standardized writing systems.  

In my Report on the proposal for a harmonized writing system, it is underlined that the proposed Grafi-

larmoni “is not a closed system” and that it “will evolve with time and practice”. Punctuation problems 

were also highlighted, as a result of which a recommendation was included for a follow up by technical 

committee. That remained pending. In the meantime, Dr Arnaud Carpooran together with his team of 

students and collaborators was in the field, testing Grafi-larmoni in the context of the elaboration of the 

first Mauritian monolingual dictionary. Its publication in 2009 was a historical landmark in the 

development of Mauritian Kreol; in the same process, Grafi-larmoni, the orthography adopted with the 

necessary improvements, obtained due recognition and legitimacy.  

The Mauritian Kreol Academy wishes to express its grateful thanks to Dr Carpooran, to the members of 

the Mauritian Kreol Orthography Validation Committee, and also to the team of students and 

collaborators, for having pursued further the already considerable scientific and professional work done 

so far, in order to offer to the Academy its first document produced in the context of the mandate 

entrusted to it by Government. Published by the Government Printing, it proudly displays the coat of 

arms of the Republic of Mauritius.

Préface du Président de l'AKM 

La création de l’Académie du kreol mauricien par le Gouvernement en octobre 2010 représente une 

étape historique majeure dans le processus de reconnaissance, de développement et de promotion de la 

langue du pays. Selon les termes de la mission qui lui a été confiée, l’Académie du Kreol Mauricien 

fera des recommandations sur : 

•

 

La standardisation du kreol mauricien, notamment dans le domaine de la prononciation,   

            de la grammaire et de la syntaxe ; 

•

 

La validation de son orthographe 

•

 

Les aspects techniques ayant trait à l’élaboration de materiels pédagogiques et à la   

            formation des maîtres ; 

•

 

La promotion et le développement de la langue. 

L’Académie du kreol mauricien eut sa première session de travail le 27 octobre 2011, le jour même de 

son lancement par le Ministre de l’Education et des Ressources Humaines, l’Honorable Vasant 

Bunwaree. Des comités techniques furent ainsi mis sur pied pour travailler sur les objectifs de 

l’Académie.  

 

Le premier rapport du comité technique pour la validation de l’orthographe du kreol mauricien, 

présidé par le Dr. Arnaud Carpooran, fut soumis pour examen à l’Académie lors de sa réunion du 10 

novembre 2010. Le rapport final fut examiné et approuvé lors d’une session spéciale le 21 décembre 

2010, au cours de laquelle l’Académie exprima son appréciation du travail accompli par les membres 

du comité technique.  

 

Au nom de l’Académie du kreol mauricien, je suis heureux de présenter le document final sur 

l’orthographe du kreol mauricien rédigé par le Dr. Carpooran. Il est bon de rappeler que ce document 

est aussi l’aboutissement de tout le travail considérable sur la graphie de cette langue, initié dans les 

années 1960 et qui a donné lieu à plusieurs systèmes standardisés en vue d’écrire le Kreol mauricien. 

En 2004, une première initiative gouvernementale déboucha sur la formation d’un comité, placé sous 

ma responsabilité et composé de linguistes de l’Université de Maurice et du Mauritius Institute of 

Education, en vue d’harmoniser les diverses graphies en usage.  

 

Comme souligné dans mon rapport, la Grafi-larmoni n’a pas été présentée comme  un système fermé 

et l’on disait qu’elle était appelée à évoluer avec le temps et l’usage. D’autres aspects techniques, 

notamment la ponctuation,  devaient être revus, d’où la recommandation inscrite dans le rapport pour 

un suivi par un comité technique. Entretemps, le projet de Diksioner Morisien du Dr. Carpooran était 

déjà en cours d’élaboration, et la Grafi-larmoni fut mise à l’épreuve du terrain. La publication du 

Diksioner Morisien monolingue en 2009 a constitué un véritable tournant dans l’évolution de la 

langue et, dans la même foulée, de la Grafi-larmoni, orthographe adoptée avec des retouches 

nécessaires.  

 

L’Académie du kreol mauricien exprime sa profonde reconnaissance et ses remerciements au Dr. 

Carpooran ainsi qu’aux membres du comité technique pour la validation de l’orthographe et de 

l’équipe d’étudiants et de collaborateurs, pour avoir conduit à terme le travail scientifique et 

professionnel entamé depuis un demi-siècle sur la graphie du kreol mauricien, en vue d’offrir à 

l’Académie son premier document de référence dans le cadre de la mission que lui a confié le 

Gouvernement pour le développement, la standardisation et la promotion de notre langue. Publié par 

l’Imprimerie du Gouvernement, il arbore fièrement les armoiries de la République.
