Abstract:
Hideo Nakamine (1922-) served as a machine gunner with the 522 nd Field Artillery Battalion during World War II. The 522 nd FAB, a unit of the 442 nd Regimental Combat Team, was one of the most efficient artillery units serving in Europe during World War II. The 522 nd FAB saw action in Italy and France alongside the 442 nd RCT. In March 1945, the 522 nd FAB was detached from the 442 nd RCT and reassigned to provide artillery support to various units participating in the Allies’ drive into Southern Germany. During this time, the 522 nd FAB assisted in the liberation of prisoners from the Dachau concentration camp and the capture of Hitler’s mountain residence at Berchtesgaden.
The Hideo Nakamine Papers contain 12 photographs taken during the 522 nd Field Artillery Battalion’s service in Germany and one folder of postwar articles and other printed materials documenting the history of the 522 nd FAB.

3 Biographical Sketch
Hideo Nakamine (1922-) served as a machine gunner with the 522 nd Field Artillery Battalion during World War II, seeing action in Italy, France, and Germany. Nakamine was from Honokaa on the Big Island of Hawaii, but he was visiting family in Honolulu when Pearl Harbor was bombed on 7 December 1941. He enlisted with the Army in 1943, and was assigned with the 522
nd FAB. Following the war, he worked at Ft. Shafter and Schofield Barracks as a post engineer.
The 522 nd Field Artillery Battalion, a unit of the 442 nd Regimental Combat Team, was one of the most efficient artillery units serving in Europe during World War II. The 522 nd FAB was comprised of three gun batteries (Able, Baker, and Charlie), a service battery, and headquarters. Each gun battery had four 105mm howitzer guns, which had an effective range of five to seven miles. The 522 nd FAB saw action in Italy and France alongside the 442 nd RCT, participating in the Rome to Arno Campaign, the Battle of Bruyeres in France, and the Champaign Campaign in Southern France.
In March 1945, the 522 nd FAB was detached from the 442 nd RCT and reassigned to the 63 rd
Division to support their assault on the Siegfried Line. The 522 nd then became a roving battalion, providing artillery support to the 45 th Division, the 44 th Division, the 4 th Division, the 12 th
Infantry, and the 101 st Airborne Division as these units pushed into Southern Germany. It was during this time that the 522 nd FAB participated in the liberation of prisoners from the Dachau concentration camp and the capture of Hitler’s mountain residence at Berchtesgaden.
4 Scope & Content Note
The Hideo Nakamine Papers contain 12 photographs taken during the 522 nd Field Artillery Battalion’s service in Germany and one folder of postwar articles and other printed materials documenting the history of the 522 nd FAB. The collection includes photographs and papers documenting the role the 522 nd played in the liberation of prisoners from the Dachau concentration camp and the capture of Hitler’s mountain residence at Berchtesgaden in 1945.
The twelve wartime photographs document the experiences of members of the 522 nd Field
Artillery Battalion while serving in Germany in 1945. The photographs include shots of Corporal Hamamoto standing by a Dachau road sign, a German airplane hidden among the trees by the side of the road, Hitler’s headquarters at Berchtesgaden, members of the 522 nd standing next to a captured German artillery gun, and German defenses along the Siegfried Line.
The postwar articles and printed materials relate to the history of the 522 nd Field Artillery Battalion, and include materials on the Dachau concentration camp, as well as an exhibit at the Smithsonian documenting the World War II experiences of Japanese Americans. The printed materials are all photocopies from the 1980s.
