Minutes of the Tourism Committee meeting on Tuesday, January 29, 2013 pursuant to notice duly given:

  1. Meeting called to order at 11:00 a.m.



  1. Roll Call

Present: Dick Doeren, Beth Larson, Ron Hayes, Ken Thompson, Ed Zahn, Dale Mohr (at 11:05)

Excused: Pete Stark, Terri Berth



Also Present: Mayor Bostedt, and Sara Perrizo, Administrator and as Recording Secretary

  1. Moved by Hayes, seconded by Thompson to approve the agenda as presented. M/C



  1. Moved by Larson, seconded by Hayes to approve the minutes of the 12/27/2012 meeting.

Motion carried upon verbal voice vote. 4 ayes

  1. Public Input/Correspondence:

None.

  1. Discussion/recommendation/updates on the following:

    1. Bottled Water

Thompson got pricing from the 7-Up Bottling Company in Green Bay. We can purchase as little as 10 cases at $.48 per 20 ounce bottle. He suggested possible putting a calendar of events on the labels. There are no upfront costs for design, layout, etc and shipping is free. Hayes stated that we had been paying $6.99 per case for 16 ounce bottles. Mohr suggested putting a QR code on the bottles that would link to the City’s website or a calendar. Hayes suggested getting a minimum order right now and the label can always be changed in the future.

Moved by Larson, seconded by Hayes to order the minimum quantity of 20 ounce water bottles with labels.

Motion carried upon verbal voice vote. 4 ayes

    1. Camera Update

Perrizo stated that the Technology Committee is working on specifications and also on getting quotes to get the existing camera system in City Hall up and running. Doeren stated that they can speak to Kevin Noack at the County. Hayes opined that it is imperative to get this going as Oconto is falling behind. Doeren will attend the next Technology Committee meeting.

    1. 2013 Fishing Tournaments & Ready Set Go Grants

Doeren stated that the grant applications have been submitted and we are awaiting a response.

    1. City Green Update

Mohr stated that the State seems to like the idea of a green City, but they are trying to figure out how to go about it. Currently, they are working on getting the Milwaukee County Parks all under one umbrella. There are questions as to what the cost should be as well as other things. Doeren stated that we should decide which events to start with and Hayes suggested Copperfest, the fishing tournaments, the fly-in, etc. Mohr will call the state again and find out exactly what information they need. As for cost, Perrizo suggested $45 per event (50% off) if more than five events are included. Mohr will continue to work on this.

    1. Oconto Paddles

Doeren took the information on the paddles to Dr. Croney at the school and she is going to speak with the teachers that would be involved. He will follow up with her.

    1. Plaques for Breakwater Park

Perrizo shared information she received from Doeren. She contacted Foth to determine if they would be interested in contributing and is awaiting a response. Mohr asked if the plaques would be anchored in cement and Doeren stated that they will. Perrizo stated that the total for 4 small and 1 large plaque will be approximately $1,600.

Moved by Hayes, seconded by Larson to purchase 4 small and 1 large plaque for Breakwater Park.

Motion carried upon verbal voice vote. 4 ayes

Doeren stated that he will order the plaques.



    1. WBAY Boat Show

Doeren stated that the show is February 14-17 and the Harbor Commission members are going to the show to works some of the shifts. The shifts are each around 4 hours long. If anyone is interested in volunteering for a shift, they should contact John Bostedt.

    1. Cabela’s MWC Site Agreement (5/31-6/2-2013)

Doeren stated that the agreement needs to be signed to move forward with the tournament. There are already some registrations.

Moved by Hayes, seconded by Larson to approve the Cabela’s MWC Site Agreement

Motion carried upon verbal voice vote. 4 ayes

    1. Expenditure Guidelines

Perrizo stated that no costs have been incurred in 2013. Hayes asked about the status of the banner poles and Perrizo said that they have been purchases and paid for.

Doeren commented on the City website and stated that he would like to see a separate page for Tourism and Upcoming Events. He will put some information together and Perrizo will get it to the web designer.



    1. For the Good of Tourism

Mohr handed out a research report done by a firm in Illinois on small town tourism. Mayor Bostedt stated that she has called Bass Pro Shops to try to get them to put a store here.
