What does your job involve?
I get involved in a wide range of activities including recruitment, accommodation moves,
finance, procurement, risk, acting as secretariat, line management, organising departmental
events, scheme sponsor of the Transport Planning graduate scheme and coaching. It’s difficult
to say no when it is for the good of the individual or the department as a whole. Getting involved
in lots of things is what I love about the job.
How did you get into transport?
It was not a conscious choice as I started out in HR, but all industries are made up of people
and actually that is what it is all about for me – whether they are customers or members of staff.
What do you like about working in transport?
I love transport planning – I’d never heard of it before I went into the department and now that
I can see how vital it is, I can’t understand why everybody doesn’t know about it!
What are you most proud of?
There are a number of things that I am proud of, including establishing a Modelling and
Transport Planning graduate scheme and being a scheme sponsor. I really love engaging with
the graduates and seeing them progress is a real thrill as I know I played a small part in their
journey. I also coach a number of staff across Transport for London – coaching is so rewarding
as you see people change and progress because of your work with them.
What do you think is the best thing about a career in transport ?
It’s so varied – it caters for all kinds of people, all kinds of skills. You just need to find your
niche.
