Prof. Ojars Sparitis
Prof. Dr. habil. art. Ojars Sparitis is both Chief of the Department for doctoral studies
and Chief of the Department for Masters Education at the Latvian Academy of Arts.
Prior to his academic post, Prof. Sparitis served as Minister of Culture of the Republic
Latvia and Editor at the Scientific Library of the Latvian Academy of Sciences.
In recent years, Prof. Sparitis has produced 12 monographs, over 150 publications on
history and theory of art and architecture, questions of periodisation, typology,
iconology, emblematics; and over 60 publications on aspects of preservation cultural
heritage. From 1987, he has participated in more than 55 regional and international
scientific symposiums and conferences in Latvia and abroad.
Prof. Sparitis is presently Chair of Chair of the Committee for public monuments of Riga
Municipality and is representative of State President at the UNESCO National
Committee. In addition, he is Chair of the Society for Protection Monuments of Culture
and Environment, Chair of the Society of Culture and Relationship of Latvian and Baltic
Germans, and is a member of ICOMOS and The Latvian Artists Union.
Awards include: the Latvian Order of The Three Stars (Officer), 10.10.2001 and the
Swedish Royal Order of The Polar Star (Commander), 15.01.2001.!
