Comparison of M0, M1 and M2 for a simple MES

The set of available technologies considered in this simplified case is shown on the left side of Figure 4, which also shows the selected configuration on the right side. The system may include photovoltaic panels, a boiler, a battery, and a PtG system. The PtG system consists of a PEM electrolyzer (PEME) and a PEM fuel cell that uses air and air to generate electricity and heat; Moreover, it is connected to a hydrogen tank (HS), which makes seasonal storage possible. The optimization objective is formulated as MILP for one purpose that minimizes the total annual cost of the system without any additional emission limits. In this context, a maximum size of 1 MW is set for the boiler to ensure PtG operation, which would be inconvenient otherwise. Here, the new methods, M1 and M2, are compared with the traditional approach (M0) and full-scale optimization (FSO). Comparison is made in terms of computational time, system design, operation and annual costs. MILP is solved using the commercial software IBM CPLEX 12.7 [61], which has a relative MIP gap of 0.01% and an aggressive policy regarding fractional reductions and Gomori research.
