subject: RHIC Experiment Shielding Working Group – Motivation and Charge
Motivation:
Problems encountered with backgrounds from RHIC beam losses during all phases of operation have seriously impacted not only the experiments ability to collect physics data but also RHIC beam tune-up. This working group is tasked to examine how such problems can be avoided.
The Charge:
Determine if shielding can be added to RHIC experimental IR’s and elsewhere to allow experiments to operate with minimal backgrounds during all phases of RHIC operations, including the nominal set-up and ramp-up phases.
W
here solutions are found, develop cost and schedule to complete the work.
A first pass at solutions is needed by
15 June to allow sufficient time to integrate the work into our summer shutdown schedule. A status report is expected to be presented at the 14 May RHIC Machine/Detector Planning Meeting.
