“The students found the visit very interesting, mainly the discussion with researchers at CERN; they expected more time within the experiment, expected that someone would walk inside the detector while explaining their parts in loco. They considered the answers to their questions less objective than the videoconference during the MasterClass 2015.”

“The students made very positive feedback. Some complained that the answers to some of their questions were beyond their understanding.”

Instituto Alpha Lumen
(Yuri Duarte Correa)

(São José dos Campos, SP)

~ 60 students

(1 teacher and 1 university professor – Fernando C. Carvalho – co-organizer of the MasterClass 2015 at SPRACE)

“The students liked very much the VV and the discussions with the people at CERN and at SPRACE/Unesp (some of them attended MasterClass 2015, others were introduced to the subject previous to the VV). However, the visit seemed a bit incomplete, which frustrated some of the students’ expectations (from what we noticed, it was not possible to have access to some parts of the detector, the person underground with the camera spent a long time explaining the detector from a poster). Also it seems that it could have been more productive if the visit was conducted in Portuguese. However, it was good that some teachers from the school could follow the visit with the students. It was also good to have one of the MasterClass organizers at the school during the visit, who then he could answer most of their questions.”

(São Paulo, SP)

“I’ve followed the entire VV on March 17. Another teacher, Fabio Tola, could stay with us during part of time as well. We had only 4 students with us during the VV, since some of the others were busy presenting their works at the Brazilian Fair for Science and Engineering (FEBRACE, in Portuguese), and the others had an exam scheduled for the same time.
We had some technical problems during the VV and in some moments, we had no sound and in others, neither sound nor image. So, we could not follow all the questions and answers in detail. Two of the students who followed the VV asked a question each, and I think they were happy with the answers! I could see that they would be willing to ask more questions, but got a bit demotivated due to the technical problems.”

Colégio Batista de
Vila Mariana

(Artur Luciano Filho)

(São Paulo, SP)

~ 70 students

“The students made positive comments. However, a larger part of this visit was in English, which did not allow them to follow the visit thoroughly. “

Comments from some students (notes taken by the teachers)

Escola de Aplicação

(USP)

(São Paulo, SP)

Wagner (2nd year HS): "The visit allowed me to have an idea of the size of CERN” (probably meant CMS). “It also illustrated a bit of what the physicists do there. I had no idea of how the scientists worked there, not even that they made research work in groups (this student had imagined that the research activities were always performed by isolated persons, not in groups).
Amanda (3rd year HS): "I like Science very much. I’ve always thought about studying Chemistry or Chemistry Engineering. Now, Particle Physics became an alternative field.” (as a professional choice). The guided virtual visit was very cool. However, it was a pity that they did not explain each part of the detector. I thought that the person holding the camera would explain each part of it, similarly to what we saw in the images (posters) during the lectures.” (Possibly referring to the Masterclass introductory lectures).

Comments from a teacher after the visits

Colégio Fecap

and Colégio Batista de Vila Mariana

(São Paulo, SP)

Arthur Luciano Filho (teacher): “It is important to emphasize that both schools highlighted the virtual guided visits and published them in their social networks. I was interviewed at Colégio Fecap and this interview was made public. I was also put in charge of organizing in a cultural event in the school, named Fecart, an exhibit of Masterclass 2015. We are planning to show part of the virtual visit there, some experiments (demonstrations), the MasterClass exercises (with CMS data) to the visitors, as well as the educational game (SPRACE Game V2.0). I believe this will be a good follow up in our community.“
