CIRCULATORY DISTURBANCES
1) Renal Hemorrhages
∙
common; petechial or ecchymotic (if renal capsule is not removed, hemorrhage can be easily
overlooked);
∙
glomeruli are often preferentially involved, giving a speckled appearance to the kidney on surface
and on section;
∙
e.g.
septicemia: “turkey egg" kidneys in pigs with salmonellosis, erysipelas, etc.;
viral infections: canine herpesvirus, hog cholera;
coagulopathies / disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC);
∙
if bacteremia / septicemia is suspected, tissues such as lung, kidney and liver should be sent for
bacteriology.
