10 Traduction de « Work commitment ». Les problèmes de définition et de terminologie ont été évoqués dès 1991 par J.-P. Neveu. Il soulignait que deux termes, dans les travaux en langue anglaise, désignaient les rapports d’ordre cognitif ou affectif liant l’employé à son univers de travail : involvement et commitment. Le premier concernait selon lui l’adéquation homme/emploi (« job involvement ») et le deuxième les rapports développés par l’individu envers l’organisation qui l’emploie (« organizational commitment »). Il remarquait également que ces deux termes avaient été traduits par « implication » dans la recherche française et proposait une clarification de la terminologie pour faciliter le développement des recherches mobilisant ce concept. Il suggérait alors d’introduire le terme « engagement », en référence aux travaux des chercheurs en psychologie, pour illustrer la relation individu/emploi tandis que le terme « implication » désignerait les rapports individu/organisation. Depuis, les travaux de P. Morrow (1993) ont conduit la plupart des chercheurs français à adopter le terme plus général d’implication au travail, englobant ainsi toutes les formes d’implication (dans l’emploi, dans l’organisation, mais aussi dans la carrière, la profession…). Cet accord sur la terminologie apparaît notamment dans l’ouvrage publié par le groupe de recherche « implication » de l’AGRH, coordonné par J.-P. Neveu et M. Thevenet, intitulé « L’implication au travail » (2002). Cependant, des travaux en langue française utilisent parfois aujourd’hui le terme « d’engagement organisationnel ». Or, d’un point de vue conceptuel, la notion d’engagement chevauche le concept de motivation, en précisant que l’individu s’engagerait dans son travail par le déploiement d’efforts intenses. Cette approche entraîne donc une confusion, en croisant partiellement le concept de « commitment » avec celui de motivation. L’implication se démarque du concept de motivation en soulignant l’importance de l’attachement (affectif, calculé ou de continuité, normatif) dans le rapport de l’individu à son organisation ou à son travail. Nous utiliserons donc le terme implication dans cette partie.
