Having spoken directly to the Wireless theatre company via email, they informed us that they have no guidelines or restrictions concerning stlye or genre. All they request is for the dramas to be submitted with their covering letter. They are primarily appealing to the ‘facebook generation’ with an easy download option.
Synposis of the story (100 words)

(Outline the narrative, main characters and how they will interact)

The year is 3015; Earth has been plagued by nuclear war. The last hope for humanity is Kepler-22b, an extra solar planet orbiting in the habitable zone of a sun-like star 600 light-years away. Elia is the final ship to escape Earth, carrying with it the last group of lottery survival winners on a 2-year voyage. Captain Daniel Walker suddenly awakes from a state of controlled stasis, not knowing how or why. Elia the on-board AI, informs him of multiple breaches to the hull and Captain Walker is sent to investigate but things aren’t quite what they seem.
Treatment (How it will sound – 200 words)

(Here discuss the style, basics of the plot and how the drama will sound overall. What will be the impact on the audience and relationship with the listener. How can I visualise it sounding)

Our piece is going to be an original futuristic thriller, which switches between fast paced scenes and periods of slow eerie movements and we hope this contrast will actively engage the listener. After being woken the drama will follow Captain Walker’s progression around the ship via a first person’s perspective. He will encounter mechanical and extra-terrestrial threats also facing moral dilemmas, as he has to decide whether or not he should sacrifice the lives of the few to save the lives of many. Primarily we want our drama to immerse the listener by putting them in Captain Walker’s shoes and evoking every emotion that he feels. Again linking in with our style of fast and slow paced scenes, the use of complementary user generated sound effects such as heavy breathing and heartbeats to create tension. These very distinguishable sounds will allow the listener to visualise the situation and relate to the character’s vista.

Technical Arrangements/Considerations

(Outline here technical decisions, mike set ups, using the studio space, any other

Recording requirements e.g. location sfx etc

The main character’s voice will be recorded using 2 AKG C414 studio microphones set up to a stereo format. We want the voice to sound as dead as possible so by using sound boards in the studio space and EQ on the desk we will attempt to achieve this. When listening to Captain Walker’s internal dialogue we will try using the opposite side of the microphone on a cardiod pattern to achive a different quality of sound so that it differs from his external dialogue. As we hope to use multiple sound effects throughout, we will use a merantz field recorder specific sound effects outside the studio. We will also be using vocoders to create robotic qualities for the voice of Eve as well as synthesising sounds for the spaceships machinery.

Critique of similar productions/podcasts

(Here highlight at least three other radio dramas/podcasts on the same radio station/website. Briefly analyse their narrative, style and treatment. How have these influenced your creative decisions ? No more than 150 words here.
First we listened to two dramas from the Wireless theatre company’s online site.
Dream me a winter was a drama revolving a young girl who talks to her parents about her general life, drug addiction and opinion on the future. Good microphone positioning and spot effects allow us to really visualise the characters in each scene. The narration is cast via a main character but with a lot of other speech from her mother.
2010 space commander was another drama on the wireless theatre company’s website. It is a comedy set in a space ship. We listened to it, to help with effects that we could use in our drama such as the sound of voice when we casting it in metal rooms and corridoors. There is a constant humming in the background which helps the listener to visualise the ship and we agreed that this would to appropriate in our drama.
Titan is a drama made last year by a student from the University of Lincoln and is on the blog. The interaction between the main character and computer is key throughout and we had a similar idea.
