Letters to My Grandma

By Anusree Roy, Directed by Lib Spry, Starring Sehar Bhojani

Identity is not only who one was in the past, but who one might be in the process of becoming.
Teesri Duniya Theatre launches its 2013-2014 season with Governor General Award nominated playwright Anusree Roy’s hit play Letters to My Grandma. The play is directed by Lib Spry and features National Theatre School graduate Sehar Bhojani. Set design by Stephanie Lambert, Lighting Design by Jody Burkholder, Costume Design by Laurence Gagnon and live music is provided by Dumisizwe Vuyo Bhembe and stage manager is Melanie St. Jacques.
Reading old letters on the day of her wedding, Malobee learns of her grandmother’s struggle to survive the 1947 partition of India, and begins to comprehend her grandma’s hidden past from a different land as she struggles to create a new life in Canada. Letters to My Grandma is a beautifully written inter-generational tale of not only how the past impacts the present but more importantly, how despite all regrets, racism and the trauma of displacement, a new Canadian cannot but be transformed in her new country.
This is an important Canadian play for Quebec in time of burning issues such as 'reasonable accommodation' and the Quebec Charter of Values.
Anusree Roy: Multiple awards including the Siminovitch Protégé Prize, Carol Bolt and Governor General Nomination, Anusree Roy has emerged as the most prominent South Asian Canadian playwright with such hit plays as Pyaasa, Brothel # 9, Roshni, and her Opera librettos: The Golden Boy and Noor over Afghan and Phoolan Devi.
