OLD TESTAMENT SURVEY

The Patriarchal stage



Week 5


  1. INTRODUCTION (Gen 12-50, Job)


    1. The important men who appear during this stage are Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, and Job.

    2. In the creation stage, God dealt with the entire world as a whole.

      1. The attention in this stage is drawn from the entire world to a nation (Israel), then to a tribe in that nation (Judah), then to a family within that tribe (Jesse), and finally to an individual within the family (Jesus Christ).

    3. This stage spans around ____________ years.

    4. We see a city destroyed on the plains (Sodom) and a _________ spared on a mountain (Isaac) – Gen 19, 22.

    5. A son (Jacob) deceives his father (Isaac) and is later himself deceived by his sons (brothers of ___________________) – Gen 27, 37.

    6. We read of the first barren wife (Sarah) and the first dying mother (Rachel) – Gen 16, 35.

    7. We see the first of three great biblical covenants introduced.

  1. ABRAHAM

    1. His Conversion – Acts 7:2

      1. Abraham was born around 2166 B.C.

      2. We know nothing about his early life or how he was led to God.

      3. He is mentioned 308 times in the Bible.

        1. 234 times in the OT - 74 in the NT.

        2. Throughout __________ of the 64 books of the Bible.

      4. Abraham was the reason the southern kingdom was spared as long as it was.

      5. Remember, the book of Genesis spans a period of around 2350 years.

        1. The first eleven chapters which cover creation, the Fall, flood, and the Tower of Babel covers 2000 years.

        2. Yet the last thirty-nine books covers only 350 years.

        3. God gives us more information about Abraham than the creation of the universe.

    2. His Calling – Gen 11:31; 12:1; Josh 24:3;Acts 7:2

      1. Abram was to leave Ur and his father’s house for a land that God would show him.

    3. His Commission – Gen 12:2-3; Acts 7:3

      1. I will make you a great nation.

      2. I will bless you.

      3. I will make your _____________ great.

      4. You will be a blessing.

      5. I will bless those who bless you.

      6. I will curse those who curse you.

      7. In you all of the families of the earth shall be blessed.

    4. His Caution – Gen 11:31,32, Acts 7:2-4

      1. God had told Abraham to leave his father’s house and proceed to Canaan.

      2. He was disobedient concerning both matters.

        1. He took his ____________ with him.

        2. He stopped in Haran.

      3. God stepped in and Terah, Abraham’s father, died and God tells him again, “Go!” – Gen 12:1.

        1. Terah means “_______________.”

    5. His Canaan – Gen 12:4-9

      1. He entered the Promised Land and Abraham built an altar to the Lord.

      2. He then moves to Bethel, a place meaning “the house of God.”

        1. He settles in and builds a second altar to the Lord.

    6. His Carnality – Gen 12:10-20

      1. The land was hit with a famine.

      2. After leaving Haran, Abraham had been obedient to God and was dwelling well in the Promised Land.

      3. He then left Palestine and went to Egypt.

        1. This is the first mention of Egypt in the Bible.

        2. In the Scriptures, Egypt is pictured as a ____________________ symbol.

        3. A symbol of relying on the things of the world instead of the provision of God – Is. 31:1

      4. The Christian therefore “goes to Egypt,” spiritually speaking, when he depends upon something or someone rather than God.

        1. Prov 3:5-7; Matt 6:31-33

      5. Pharaoh planned on marrying Sarai, but was plagued by God and eventually found out of Abraham’s deception.

        1. After a dangerous and embarrassing time, Abraham returned to Palestine, where he should have stayed to start with.

      6. Abraham’s results of disobedience.

        1. He ________________ God!

        2. He weakened his own faith.

          1. He did the same thing again in Gen 20.

        3. He became a poor testimony to his nephew Lot.

        4. He caused Pharaoh and his house to be afflicted.

          1. Sometimes others suffer because of Christian’s sin.

          2. Plus he is rebuked by an ___________________.

        5. He picks up Hager, the Egyptian servant (Gen 16:3), which would later become Abram’s mistress and would give birth to Ishmael, the father of the modern ________________.

          1. The most troubled and turbulent spot in the entire world is the Middle East.

          2. Caused in part by Abraham’s sin some forty centuries ago.

        6. He provided a bad example for his son Isaac.

          1. Even though he was not yet born, he was probably aware.

          2. And he did the same thing to his wife Rebekah (Gen 26).

    7. His Condescension – Gen 13:1-18

      1. He returns to Bethel and calls on the name of the Lord.

      2. The servants of Abraham and the servants of Lot began arguing over grazing rights.

      3. Abraham allowed Lot to choose his choice of land.

        1. Lot foolishly chose the land near Sodom and left the Promised Land never to ________________.

      4. God reappeared to Abraham for the third time and reassured him of His promise.
