OLD TESTAMENT SURVEY
The Patriarchal stage
Week 5
INTRODUCTION (Gen 12-50, Job) -
The important men who appear during this stage are Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, and Job.
-
In the creation stage, God dealt with the entire world as a whole.
-
The attention in this stage is drawn from the entire world to a nation (Israel), then to a tribe in that nation (Judah), then to a family within that tribe (Jesse), and finally to an individual within the family (Jesus Christ).
-
This stage spans around ____________ years.
-
We see a city destroyed on the plains (Sodom) and a _________ spared on a mountain (Isaac) – Gen 19, 22.
-
A son (Jacob) deceives his father (Isaac) and is later himself deceived by his sons (brothers of ___________________) – Gen 27, 37.
-
We read of the first barren wife (Sarah) and the first dying mother (Rachel) – Gen 16, 35.

The Abrahamic Covenant, promising a good _____________ – Gen 15.
-
ABRAHAM
-
His Conversion – Acts 7:2
-
Abraham was born around 2166 B.C.
-
We know nothing about his early life or how he was led to God.
-
He is mentioned 308 times in the Bible.
-
234 times in the OT - 74 in the NT.
-
Throughout __________ of the 64 books of the Bible.
-
Abraham was the reason the southern kingdom was spared as long as it was.
-
Remember, the book of Genesis spans a period of around 2350 years.
-
The first eleven chapters which cover creation, the Fall, flood, and the Tower of Babel covers 2000 years.
-
Yet the last thirty-nine books covers only 350 years.
-
God gives us more information about Abraham than the creation of the universe.
-
His Calling – Gen 11:31; 12:1; Josh 24:3;Acts 7:2
-
Abram was to leave Ur and his father’s house for a land that God would show him.
-
His Commission – Gen 12:2-3; Acts 7:3
-
I will make you a great nation.
-
I will bless you.
-
I will make your _____________ great.
-
You will be a blessing.
-
I will bless those who bless you.
-
I will curse those who curse you.
-
In you all of the families of the earth shall be blessed.
-
His Caution – Gen 11:31,32, Acts 7:2-4
-
God had told Abraham to leave his father’s house and proceed to Canaan.
-
He was disobedient concerning both matters.
-
He took his ____________ with him.

-
God stepped in and Terah, Abraham’s father, died and God tells him again, “Go!” – Gen 12:1.

He settles in and builds a second altar to the Lord.
-
His Carnality – Gen 12:10-20
-
The land was hit with a famine.
-
After leaving Haran, Abraham had been obedient to God and was dwelling well in the Promised Land.
-
He then left Palestine and went to Egypt.
-
This is the first mention of Egypt in the Bible.
-
In the Scriptures, Egypt is pictured as a ____________________ symbol.
-
A symbol of relying on the things of the world instead of the provision of God – Is. 31:1
-
The Christian therefore “goes to Egypt,” spiritually speaking, when he depends upon something or someone rather than God.
-
Prov 3:5-7; Matt 6:31-33
-
Pharaoh planned on marrying Sarai, but was plagued by God and eventually found out of Abraham’s deception.

Caused in part by Abraham’s sin some forty centuries ago.
-

Even though he was not yet born, he was probably aware.

And he did the same thing to his wife Rebekah (Gen 26).
