| Compare theories on leadership in organizational context
Organizational leadership often requires two types of motivation: intrinsic and extrinsic. Natural competitiveness and a strong will to succeed against adversity are intrinsic forms of motivation. Emotions and “gut” feelings also are intrinsic traits of organizational leaders. Extrinsic motivation includes factors outside of a leader’s individual personality. Money, prestige and popularity are a few examples of extrinsic motivation factors.
Function
Organizational leadership and motivation can help leaders strive for high levels of business success. Leaders may see success as bringing new products to the marketplace or developing effective business strategies. These, in turn, often lead to new opportunities for leaders to explore. Leaders and business owners often build upon the success of one situation by looking for more ways to achieve higher and greater success. This scenario falls under the classic business phrase “success breeds success.”
Considerations
Leaders should consider attending seminars or trade shows to build upon their internal and external motivational factors. These events give leaders new ideas or resources to enhance current business operations. Leaders also can use these opportunities as prime network situations to develop new relationships. Business owners also mine seminars and trade shows for potential employees who can help them increase their company’s success.
Warning
Leaders who continually focus on developing organizational leadership may overlook crucial business details. These details may be seen as unimportant since they believe the potential success of new opportunities will outweigh any negative situations. Negative situations can include high business cash outflows or low consumer sales. A leader’s strong personality and incentive to strive also can rub employees or other business owners the wrong way. Strong “A” type personalities may create stressful workplace environments and prohibit leaders from accomplishing goals and objectives.
