The Institute of Asian Studies started its activities from January 2009.

SUBJECT MATTER OF ACTIVITIES

The basic mission of the Institute of Asian Studies (hereinafter referred to as ‘the IAS’) is the implementation of the following activities:

  1. Initiation and implementation of agreements on mutual cooperation between the Prešov University in Prešov (hereinafter referred to as ‘the PU‘) and partner universities in Asian countries.

  2. Initiation and brokering of study stays, fellowships and lecturing stays of university teachers of the PU and of university teachers of partner universities in Asian countries.

  3. Initiation and brokering of exchange study stays of students in master and doctoral study programmes at the PU and at partner universities in Asian countries.

  4. Development of language competence. Organising courses and consultations in the Slovak language, Japanese language, Chinese language or possibly other Asian languages on the basis of mutual agreements and cooperation between the PU and Asian universities and also on the basis of requirements from businesses and organisations operating in Slovakia.

  5. Initiation and implementation of reciprocal presentation events in culture, arts (artistic bodies, artistic soloists, theatres, artistic crafts, etc.) and tourism.

  6. Organising of scientific conferences, workshops, colloquia and workshops focused on the mutual exchange of experience and knowledge and on the comparison of approaches and methods in specified areas of the Slovak and Asian environments.

The activities during the year 2009

  • January 6. – 10. 2009 - Visiting Soochow University in Taiwan (consultation about the possibilities of cooperation between the IAS and the Institute of Central European Studies in Soochow University – the participant in the consultation was Mgr.Aro Chikashige, the expert officer of IAS)

  • February 6. 2009 - Getting the visit of the cultral attaché Ms.Masako Morishita and Ms.Zuzana Želinská from the cultural section of the Japanese embassy in Bratislava (conceptions of IAS, the possibilities of surport from Japanese side, inspection of IAS, the reception leading by rector PU)

  • February 13. – 17. 2009 - Getting the visit of the chief director Ms.Miki Adachi from the Japanese national television (cooperation with IAS in terms of collecting data and shooting the films on the memorial sights of UNESCO in Slovakia, wooden churches in Kežmarok, Ladomírová, Bodružal, a village Vlkovce in Kežmarok district – preparation for the filmscript, visiting general vicar of the Greek Catholic‘s diocese in Prešov )

  • March 3. 2009 - The informative seminar on the scholarships and grants in Asian countries for the postgraduate students, teachers in universities and researchers. (copertner is a branch office of the SAIA in Prešov – initiation and instillation about the sojourn in Asian countries for the students, teachers and reserchers at PU)

  • March 4. – 6. 2009 - The Japanese language course for the postgraduate students PF PU (lectures: Mgr. Aro Chikashige, Mgr. Naoki Kosaka, PhD. )

  • March 15. – April 1. 2009 - The Japanese first TV document on the cultural memorial sights of UNESCO in the eastern part of Slovakia (The scientific, expert and methodical cooperation with the Japanese national television when they shot the documental film which was televised in May 18. 2009. This film is stocked in the archives at IAS)

  • April 20. – 24. 2009 - Intensive course for Japanese language and the culture

  • May 18. – 22. 2009 - Intensive course for Japanese language and the culture

  • July 9. 2009 - The lecture and meeting with participants of the Children University at PU in Prešov – Mgr. Aro Chikashige ( the subject for discussion : What do you know about Japan? )

  • August 23. 2009 - Arriving of Taiwanese student Huang Lin-Ying with the aim of long stay for studying at IAS PU in Prešov

  • September 1. 2009 - Arriving of Japanese professor Akihiro Ishikawa, PhD. from Chuo University in Tokyo with the aim of long stay for studying for three months at IAS PU in Prešov

  • September 10. 2009 - Getting the official trip and visit of Taiwanese professor Chang Chia-Ming, PhD. from Soochow University in Taipei

  • September 18. 2009 - „ Japan Day’s 2009“ – the workshop of Japanese traditional origami and the tea ceremony, The faculty of education

  • September 19. 2009 - „ Japan Day’s 2009“ – the workshop of Japanese traditional origami and the tea ceremony, The eastern Slovak art gallary in Košice

  • October 22. 2009 - „ Japan Day’s 2009“ – „The Japanese buckwheat cuisine“ the main ceremony of whole event. This event is co-organized by the Japanese foundation COMMEMORATIVE ORGANIZATION FOR THE JAPAN WORLD EXPOSITION ´70, the embassy of Japan in Bratislava, the Japan-Slovak association in Tokyo and the Slovak-Japanese association in Prešov.   • October 28. 2009 - The lecture of professor Ishikawa, the guest professor at IAS in Prešov, at the faculty of humanities and natural sciences in PU, the department for geography. The subject for the lecture: „The current cultural-social and economic situation in Japan“

  • October 14. – December 18. 2009 - The training course of Belly dance and the Indian dance - leading by Taiwanese student Huang Lin-Ying, who stayes with the aim of long stay for studying at IAS PU in Prešov

  • November 2. – 20. 2009 - Intensive course for Japanese writing and reading, leading by guest professor Ishikawa
