VeLLiyai vizhi paRitthu kutthikkiLari, Maavaliyai maNNum ViNN ulahum paRittha kuRal Vedattu = our Lord took the VaamanAvatAram( dwarf form) and sought as dhAnam three steps of land from Bali Chakravarthi at His yajn~am . The asura guru , SukrAcchar advised Bali not to go thru that deeding since He recognized the Dwarf was none other than Maha VishNu in that guise to retrieve the Iswaryam lost by the dEvAs in their fight with the asuraa king . Bali would not accept the recommendation of his AchAryan and began to pour water from his Kamandalu to seal the gift . At that time , SukrAcchar took the form of a beetle and blocked the flow of water by getting inside the KamanDalu . Vaaman Moorthy used the sharp end of dharbhai from His pavitram to poke and stir the eye of SukrAcchAr , who was blocking the flow of water from Emperor Bali's KamaNdalu . SukrAcchAr lost one of his eyes and stayed away from blocking the dhAnam of three steps of land by Bali Chakravarthi . VeLLi is Sukran . Vizhi paRitthu means the taking away of the eye. From Bali , the Lord took away the earth and the sky , when He grew gigantic to measure the earth and the sky with two steps and placed His third step on the head of Bali and sent him to the nether world to rule forever from there .

Benefiting from that Moola Mantra upadEsam , Thirumangai composed Periya Thirumozhi , ThirukkurumtANDakam , ThirunedumtANadakam, ThiruvEzhukURRirukkai , Siriya Thirumadal and Periya Thirumadal . Those Paasurams remove both Paapam and PuNyam ( two kinds of Vinais) and make one ready for Moksha anugraham . Oh RanganAtha! AchArya RaamAnuja fulfilled the three wishes of Swamy AlavantAr at the time of His dEha viyOham and released His three bent fingers . PiLLai PerumAL Iyengar salutes therefore AchArya RaamAnuja as dear to Swamy AlavantAr ( AlavantArkkanbAm EmperumAnAr). Periya Nampi was the direct disciple of

Swamy AlavantAr and principal AchAryan of Sri RaamAnuja thru the initiation of the three rahsyams ( AshtAksharam/Yettum , IraNDum/Dhvayam and idham/charama slOkam uraitta Periya Nampi).

“ Periya Nampi irakkam paada “ refers to the KrupA ViSEsham of Periya Nampi that is being sung in the courtyard (Thiru MURRam) of Lord RanganAtha .

NaanmuhanAr tAtaiyAr AdirUsal= The Father( Taatai) of Brahma Devan (NaanmuhanAr) enjoyed His Unjal utsavam .

(Comments): Idhamuraitta Periya Nambi means the Periya Nampi , who revealed the esoterics of AdhyAtma saastrams to Sri RaamAnujA . Iyal stands for Iyarppa and Tamizh Vedam ; “Sruti paada” means the Veda PaarAyaNa Ghoshti that follows the Lord . NaanmuhanAr Taathai relates to the Lord , who initiated His son , Brahma Devan in to the Four VedAs and their meanings as Sri Hayagrivan and as Swan at times before creation and when His son lost the Srutis due to neglect . (Comments): The First two lines of this Paayiram celebrate the Vaibhavam of AchArya RaamAnuja , who was uninfluenced by the pushpa bhANams( arrows) of Manmatan and stayed as a Viraktar and defeated the tenets of advaita darSanam , spread the doctrines of Sri VisishtAdhvaitam all over and planted the Jaya Stampam at Srirangam . This resulted in the King to be afflicted with worms in his neck . To that king's court went Sri KooratthAzhwAn to protect his AchAryan and roundly rejected the king's command to agree and sign that Sivan was superior to Sriman NaarAyaNan . The King wanted KurattAzhwAn to sign

“ SivAth Parataram nAsti” ( There is no god , who is superior to Siva). Kuresar made a pun out of the word “siva” meaning KuruNi ( a measure of volume) and wrote “DhrOnam asti tata: Param “ ( Yes, there is Padakku/dhrONam , which is larger than “Siva/KuRuNi ). The enraged king ordered his servants to pull the eyes of KurESar and the devout sishyA of AchArya RaamAnuja plucked out His own eyes . That grave apachAram on the part of the king resulted in the king dying a miserable death . PiLLai PerumAL IyengAr pays tribute to the greatness of KurEsar who lost His darsanam ( sight) to protect the darSanam ( philosophy) of VisishtAdhvaitam
