Membership Corner

What makes a happy club?

  • A club where everyone feels appreciated and have something to contribute? DEFINITELY

  • A club where there are worthwhile community projects? DEFINITELY

  • A club where all members are treated with respect? DEFINITELY

All of these and more play a vital role in a happy club? BUT WHAT ROLE DOES “FUN” FULFIL?

Fun is the glue that keeps people coming back to Lions. Tommy Bolin is quoted as saying, “If you’re not having fun, it’s not worth doing.” I’m not sure whether that applies to all of us in our work situations. There’s a lot to be said for the “just getting on with it” attitude. But that is work, not Lions where our time is given voluntarily.

So how do we have fun at Lions?

  • Regular social outings

  • Less formal meetings

  • Clever but respectful tail twisting

  • Quick coffee debrief after community projects

So how does your club have fun? We’d love to hear from clubs who are having fun, what they do, and how they do it, so we can put your great ideas in the next Newsletter to inspire other clubs to try something new.

Email me at debnrich@netspace.net.au to share the FUN!

In closing I feel it appropriate to quote that wonderful source of inspiration to many around the world, Dr Seuss, when he wrote,

If you never did you should.

These things are fun and fun is good!!”

Camp Duckadang News

It’s been an action packed few months up at Camp Duckadang.  The last working bee was extremely productive.  The Grange has received a mini makeover with thanks to the Deception Bay Lions Club for funding the majority of this.

Belinda has been hectic with the camp being booked solid for the last several months. In the last several weeks the RYLA group have been keeping her and her assistants on their toes.  Her holiday has been well deserved!

During the school holidays we had a visit from the Brown family.  Melissa Brown is the daughter of Doug and Jan Evans who are currently floating around the Darwin area.  Her husband Wayne, their children and Wayne’s parents were kind enough to work on the gardens below Hamilton Hall and repair the retaining wall whilst they holidayed.  Melissa has been coming to Duckadang since she was little and loves contributing in any way she can.  Thank you to the Brown Family.

Wednesday the 13th of July a Tree Planting ceremony was held to acknowledge the wonderful contributions that Mr. David Doo provided to the camp.  Duckadang was extremely close to his heart and he and Joan rarely missed a working bee.  David was a member of the Lions Club of Lake Currimundi-Kawana.  As the years go by we look forward to the tree flourishing and watching over our Camp.

Please remember that all donations you provide are very welcome.  We will be uploading a ‘Wish List’ on to the website in the coming months  www.campduckadang.com.au

We have also featured on WIN TV with our participation with the International Research Project Desert Fireball Network.  We have uploaded the link to both our website and our Facebook page for you to watch.

We are currently investigating solar options, so if you know any Corporates that would like to give a 20Kw system to a deserving beneficiary we are more than happy to accept it!

Next working bee is for a weekend in late November.  We look forward to seeing you there.  Details will be on the Camp Duckadang Facebook page soon and we will also advise you in the next newsletter.

Fellow Lions of District Q3.

The 2016/2017 year for the Lions Medical Research Foundation is upon us.

We had a wonderful year of fellowship and fundraising and had great success, but like old news yesterday’s event is over and we have to start afresh for the new year’s activities.

The need to provide funds is great and on-going as we have to provide our researchers with the monetary means to keep on trying to find their illusive cures for all of us.

Presidents:

Has your Club supported the Lions Medical Research Foundation before?

Have you had an Entrant in the Lions Medical Research Foundation Personality Quest before?

If you can say YES to either of these questions, please consider having an entrant this year.

If you can say NO to either of these questions, it’s time you gave me a call to tell you about the wonderful work that is going on in the Lions Medical Research Foundation by our three Researchers now or what has occurred in the past since the Foundations inception.

Please phone me on 0448-955-744 or drop me a line to be your guest speaker at robcar57@bogpond.net.au

Thank you,

Lion Bob

Q3 Director, Lions Medical Research Foundation.

bunnings 009.jpg

It is the first facility to be built in Brisbane and in Queensland and will offer a comprehensive continuum of care to babies, children and teens with life limiting illnesses and their families throughout Queensland.

Hummingbird House will be a fully accredited ACHS medical facility with strong links to the Paediatric Palliative Care Services at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Brisbane.

The Hummingbird Story

The Lions Club of Lake Currimundi-Kawana worked a Sausage Sizzle at Bunnings, Caloundra to raise funds for Hummingbird House, Queensland’s only Children’s Hospice.

A great day was had by all raising a grand total of $2,065.40. Bunnings provided all the food and drinks and we went to work doing what we do best, raising money for those less fortunate than ourselves. We also collected donations and sold their merchandise. Hummingbird House is the first project as a joint initiative of Queensland kids and Wesley Mission Brisbane.
It will operate as an 8 bed, 24/7 medical facility including physician and nursing support, pain and symptom management, both scheduled and emergency respite care and end-of-life care.

Yarn Bombing the Park
