A Practise for Purifying the Heart

John Goldthwait, Ph.D.

INTRODUCTION
Under Swami’s guidance, I have composed the statements below. Each one reflects the spiritual principles that Sai Baba elucidates in the quotes that follow them. They will deepen your understanding of Swami’s teachings and assist you in shifting from identifying with your false self to realising your True Self that is Love. Begin by reading through all the statements and Sai Baba’s divine words to gain an understanding of what they contain. Then there are several ways that these statements and quotes can be used as a spiritual practise.
One way is to make a commitment to repeat the first statement silently or out loud many times on the first day of practise and then the second one on the second day and so on until you have completed all one hundred. Another way to use these statements is to ask for Sai Baba’s guidance and open the booklet at random and use the first statement you see for your practise that day. Then select another statement in the same way for each succeeding day. As you repeat a statement, contemplate the meaning of the statement and Sai Baba’s divine words and how they might be applied to the present moment.

1The statements and Sai Baba’s teachings can also be used when you want to free yourself from a particular attachment, such as to a heart-closing thought. In this case, read through the statements until you find one that speaks to your concern and then focus on it and Sai Baba’s teaching until you can release the attachment. In addition, reading the quotes can be used as a reminder of Swami’s teachings.

The Statements and Sai Baba Quotes

  1. Whatever I see is a reflection of me.

All these things you see around you are your own reflections, as if in a mirror.” (Sai Baba, Summer Showers 1990, p. 118)

2. My senses tell me that there is a world outside myself but this is not so.

There are many things that we see hear and experience. We think that it is the eyes that see, the ears that hear and the mind that experiences. In fact, it is not so. Everything is reaction, reflection and resound.” (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, April 2003, p.118)

3. Good and evil are present in my mind, not in the world.

In this world, we see and hear about the dualities of good and evil, merit and sin. What is the origin of all these? They originate from man’s Sankalpas and Vikalpas (good and bad thoughts). Good and evil are present in the mind of man, not in the world. When man cultivates sacred thoughts, he will find sacredness all around.” (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, April 2003, p.119)

4. When I purify my heart, I will find purity everywhere.

Once man purifies his heart, he will find purity everywhere. The world outside is just a reflection of your heart. If you fill your heart with love, you will experience love everywhere. If there is hatred in your heart, the same is reflected outside. Whatever you see, hear and experience outside is only the reflection, reaction and resound of your inner being. (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, August 2002, p.244)

5. I have been born to realize my true nature is Supreme Consciousness.

You have been born because you did not pass in certain subjects; there is some balance of experience which you must acquire to complete the course. If you become convinced through Self-realization, that your true nature is Supreme Consciousness, then you have finished the course, you have ‘passed.’” (Sai Baba, Teachings of Sri Sathya Sai Baba, p.109)

6. My attachments and desires prevent me from awakening to my true nature.

The body is tainted with the dirt of Raga and Dwesha–attachment and hatred. The senses are shrouded in the soiled cloth of desires and sensuous pleasure. The mind has been polluted by all these impurities. As a result man is unable to recognise his true nature.” (Sai Baba, Summer Showers 1990, p.99)

  1. My ego and attachments stand between me and God.

Ego and attachment stand as obstacles in our path. Only when you give up ego and attachment will you have purity of heart, which in turn will lead you to the experience of Supreme Wisdom.” (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, November 1998, p.283)

The man who is wrapped up in his ego cannot recognize God. When ego goes, God appears.” (Sai Baba, Sathya Sai Speaks, Volume XXI, p.177)

8. What I experience outside is a reflection of my heart.

Whatever you experience outside is nothing but the reflection, reaction and resound of what is in your heart. Today negative qualities are prevalent in the world. What is the reason? The reason is that man’s heart today is full of negative feelings. All that is witnessed in the world is the reflection of man’s heart. Man should purify his heart to receive divine grace.” (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, January 2002, p.25)

9. As long as I have attachment, I will not be free.

That mind is in bondage which craves for objects, for the company of men, and prefers this location nor that. Attachment is bondage; non-attachment is Liberation, Moksha, Mukthi. To crave is to be imprisoned, to die. To withdraw the mind from all attachment is to be free, to live forever.” (Sai Baba, Jnana Vahini, p.19)

10. Whatever I think I see in the outside world is actually in me.

All that you see in the outside world is actually a part of you. Consider this example. There is someone who hates you. Actually, it is the hatred in you that has taken the form of hatred in him. In the same manner, praise or blame, good or evil are reflections of your own self. Whatever you see in the outside world, whatever you experience, has, in fact, come from within you.” (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, April, 2003, p.118)

11. Only God is. The apparent world is an illusion.

Only God exists. The world is but an illusion.” (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, April 2005, p.111)

There is nothing other than the Self in the universe. All the things you see as existing in the phenomenal world are but reflections of the One Self.” (Sai Baba, Summer Showers 1990, p.120)

12. I welcome all obstacles and troubles because they teach me equanimity.

March resolutely forward in love, no matter what the obstacles. Welcome troubles; welcome, welcome, welcome! If sorrow comes, welcome it; if pleasure comes, welcome that also. Sukhadukhe Samekruthwa Labhalabhau Jayajayau (one should remain equal-minded in happiness and sorrow, gain and loss, victory and defeat).” (Sanathana Sarathi, April 2002, p.116)

13. The good and bad I see in the world I are just my own reflections.

All the good and bad that you come across in the external world are just your own reflections. So, do not point an accusing finger at others. The whole world depends on your own conduct. If you are good, so too will the world be. It is a mistake to think that there is evil all around you in the world. In fact, it is your own evil which is reflected outside. If your feelings are demonic, the world all around you will look demonic to you. If your feelings are divine, you will find divinity everywhere.”

(Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, August 2002, p.244-45)

14. My enemies do me a service by reflecting how I have closed my heart.

All that you see is the reflection of what is inside you. If you call a person bad, it is just that the bad in you is reflected in him. It has got nothing to do with him. Good and bad are reflections of your inner being. Never consider that good and bad are separate from you.” (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, August 2001, p.279)

15. There is only one real choice: Do I choose Love or close my heart.

Nothing exists other than love in this world.” (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, January 2001, p.7)

16. Love will appear in the world when it appears in me.

Hence, man should become the very embodiment of love. When he is filled with love, the entire world will be transformed into a love-filled world.” (Sai Baba, Sathya Sai Speaks, Volume XXIV, p.279)

17. My True Self is God.

You are God. God is not separate from you. It is a mistake to consider yourself separate from God. This difference is a result of your deluded vision. When you rectify this defect in your vision, you will realise ‘I am I.’” (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, April 2004, p.107-8)

18. The world I see is not real but a creation of my mind.

The entire world is the projection of the mind.” (Sai Baba, Sathya Sai Speaks, Volume XXI, p.190)

All the forms are creations of the mind.” (Sai Baba, Sathya Sai Speaks, Volume XXVII, p.114)

19. When I see something bad in a person, it means my feelings toward that person are bad.

Whatever you see in others is only a reflection of your own self. When you see something bad in a person, it just indicates that your own feelings towards that person are bad....Good and bad are all within you.” (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, March 2002, p.66-67)

20. Sai Baba is with me and in me wherever I am.

My beloved ones, you are My Own Self.” (Sai Baba, Sathyam Sivam Sundaram, part IV, p.131)

21. My mind is the cause of my suffering.

Buddha did penance for six long years. One day he opened his eyes and said he had caught hold of the thief. Who is the thief? It is the mind. He realised that mind was the root cause of all suffering. If you control your mind, you will never suffer.” (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, Novermber 1998, p.287)

22. I already am the Love that I seek.

Love is your true nature. Nothing can exist in this world without love. You are the embodiment of love. Forgetting your reality, you are craving for mundane things. What you have to aspire for and what you have to experience and enjoy in this world is love and love alone. Other than love, nothing is permanent.” (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, February 2003, p.56-7)

23. My experience of Sai Baba is a reflection of me.

You see the reflection of your own feelings in Me as you see your reflection in a clean mirror. Purify your hearts. Only then can you understand the truth.”

(Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, August 2002, p.248)

24. To purify my heart, I must release my attachment to worldly desires

In the heart of every human being, there is the fire of wisdom. That fire signifies a pure heart. Today we are not able to see that fire because the heart is enveloped by the ash of worldly desires.” (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, August 1994, p.210)

25. Only Love is permanent.

Only one thing is permanent and that is divine love. It connects heart to heart and love to love, so we must develop love.” (Sai Baba, Sathya Sai Newsletter USA, Vol. 21, No. 2, p. 10)

26. My experience of the world reflects my inner feelings.

The external world is a reflection, a resound and reaction of the inner feelings. . . .What is felt within appears as a phenomenon outside.” (Sai Baba, Sathya Sai Speaks, Volume XXV, p.252)

27. Closing my heart to others is closing my heart to my Self.

Do not cause pain to others by using harsh words. In fact, others are not others but your own self as the same principle of Atma is present in all. The one who causes pain and the one who suffers from it are one and the same. So never speak in such a way as to hurt others.” (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, August 2001, p.227)
“Truly I say as you did it to the least of my brethren, you did it to me.” (Matthew 25:40)

28. My anger causes me to suffer from closing my heart.

Today man is becoming a victim of anger. Who is affected by anger? It is not others but you who are affected by it. . . .Therefore, make efforts to control your anger. It is foolishness to consider yourself high and consider others low as every being is the embodiment of divinity.” (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, April 2002, p.100)

29. As long as I am attached to my mind, I cannot know God.

It is important to recognize that as long as the mind is there, desires will not leave you. As long as you have desires, the false notion of ‘I’ and ‘Mine’ will not leave you. As long as the feeling of ‘I’ and ‘mine’ is there, Ahamkara–your wrong identification with the body–will not leave you. As long as Ahamkara does not leave you, Ajnana, ignorance, too will not leave you. In effect, it means that there is no way other than annihilation of the mind to obtain Atma-jnana, knowledge of the Self, or Atma-darshan, vision of the Self, or Atmananda, Bliss of the Self, whatever you may choose to call it.” (Sai Baba, Summer Showers 1990, p.116-117)

30. I can annihilate the mind by quietude.

You may chant the names of Rama, Krishna, Govinda, Buddha and Sai to steady your mind. Once the mind becomes steady, you don’t need to chant. Observe total silence. That is why it is said, silence is golden. Once words become less, the activities and vagaries of the mind also become less. As words increase, the vagaries of the mind also increase. Annihilate the mind by quietude. However, it is more easily said than done. Man may die but the mind will not die. The mind vanishes when words vanish from it. Observing Mounam (silence) is one of the ways of silencing the mind.” (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, July 2002, p.198)
1“Manonashanam (annihilation of the mind) is what you should strive for.” (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, March 2004, p.72)

31. For my mind to become silent, I must not follow it or grasp it.

Let the mind run wherever it likes; only be careful you do not follow it, seeking to discover where it is going.” (Sai Baba, Dhyana Vahini, p.42)

32. To know my True Self, I must transcend the mind.

You should know your real identity by transcending the mind.”
(Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, April, 2004, p. 107)

You see the phenomenal universe only as long as you have not crossed the threshold of the mind. Once you go beyond the mind, you will experience nothing but the Self.” (Sai Baba, Summer Showers 1990, p.125)

33. Everything that happens is God’s will.

Every act in this world, even the tiniest one, is happening per the Will of God.

(Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, November 2004, p. 314)

All things happen according to the Divine will–Daiva Sankalpam.”

(Sai Baba, Summer Showers 1990, p.150)

34. I welcome whatever happens because it is for my own welfare.

Whatever you see, hear or experience, it is all for the welfare of humanity. Some people complain that God gave them troubles and sorrows. But God does not observe any difference between what you call sorrow and happiness. . . . I have been repeatedly emphasising, man should always think that everything is for his own good, be it sorrow or happiness. Man undergoes all sorts of suffering because he is unable to realise this truth. One has to strive to recognise the truth underlying God’s creation.” (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, November 2004, p. 314)

Welcome all the blows of fate, all the misfortunes and miseries, as gold welcomes the crucible, the hammer and the anvil, in order to get shaped into a jewel.” (Sai Baba, Sathya Sai Speaks, Volume III, Chapter 23)

35. God is not outside but within me.

Divinity is present within you. Unable to realise your innate divinity, you waste time searching for God outside. Whatever you see and experience in the world is only the reaction, reflection and resound of your feelings. Do not get deluded by the reaction, reflection and resound. Turn your mind inward and contemplate on the reality within you. You will certainly be able to experience divinity. You should have divinity as your goal and nothing else. Divinity is one without a second, and is all-pervasive.” (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, January 2005, p.10-11)

36. To know Truth, I must turn away from desires and sensory attachment.

Be ever and always immersed in the search for Truth; do not waste time in the multiplication and satisfaction of wants and desires. One source of pleasure craves as a corollary to another source. Thus the mind seeks again and gain to acquire objects it has given up; so, do not yield to the vagaries of the mind. Turn back, even forcibly, from sensory attachment.” (Sai Baba, Jnana Vahini, p.10)

37. The world reflects my thoughts so it will change when they change.

The external world will reflect your thoughts. If you view the world with love, it will appear as filled with love. If you view it with hatred, everything will appear antagonistic to you.” (Sai Baba, Sathya Sai Speaks, Volume XVI, p.84)

38. If I purify my heart, the world will be full of love.

Once man purifies his heart, he will find purity everywhere. The world outside is just a reflection of your heart. If you fill your heart with love, you will experience love everywhere.” (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, August, 2002, p.244-45)

39. To realise God, I must let go of all desires.

Of course, even pure desires are a bond. This means that even the purest of Vasanas, the craving for Moksha or Liberation, has to disappear in time. Only then can You become That.” (Sai Baba, Dhyana Vahini, p.59)

40. My thoughts have a far greater power than I know.

The thought vibrations are the cause for man’s joy and sorrow, health and disease, woe and weal, birth and death. Man’s life becomes meaningful if he conducts himself fully aware of the power of the thought vibrations. The entire world is suffused with mental vibrations. In fact, the whole world is the manifestation of mental vibrations. Hence, it is necessary to direct our thoughts on noble paths.” (Sai Baba, Summer Showers 1993, p.48)

41. God is inside me just as Sai Baba says.

Never be under the mistaken notion that God is outside. God is not outside; God is inside. He is always in you.” (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, November 2004, p.321)

42. By becoming free of attachment I will be liberated.

What is the real meaning of Moksha? Moha Kshaya (removal of attachment) is Moksha (liberation). So long as one has attachment, one cannot think of liberation.” (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, July 2005, p.189)

43. My sorrow comes from closing my heart.

Man by his very nature is Ananda Swarupa (embodiment of bliss) but he is engulfed in sorrow. What is the reason? His evil qualities are responsible for his sorrow. Sorrow has not suddenly descended upon him from somewhere. Sorrow is the reaction, reflection and resound of his evil qualities. In fact, all your bad qualities come back to you in the form of reaction, reflection and resound, leaving no scope for good qualities. If someone is ridiculing you, take it that it is not the other person but your own evil feelings being returned to you in the shape of ridicule.” (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, April 2003, p.108)

44. I must control my mind to perceive the Truth.

All the names and forms that fill this universe and constitute its nature are but creations of the Mind. Therefore, the mind has to be controlled and its wayward fancies calmed in order to perceive the Truth.” (Sai Baba, Jnana Vahini, p.38)

45. To know my True Self, I must cease my attachment to the sensory world.

For experiencing the Atma as your Reality, control of the senses, removal of physical attachment, and truth are essential.” (Sai Baba, Upanishadvahini, p.76)

46. There is no one to blame and no one to praise. All is God.

“The Lord Himself declared: ‘Arjuna! All this originated from Me, all this exists in Me, but I am not dependent on all this, remember I am unattached to all this.’ Here there are two points of view: the Jivi point of view and the Lord’s point of view. The Jivi has the dual experience of good and bad, the Lord has no duality at all. When all is God, when God is the inner Atma in all, how can here be two, one good and another bad?

“Now, ordinary folk may get some doubts on this point. The Lord says that all things both good and bad originated from Him and that He is the Prime Cause; but at the same time, He declares that He is neither bound nor affected by the effects or defects of all that has thus originated! He says He has no relationship with them that the He is above and beyond that for which He is the Cause.

“You might infer that man too is not in the least responsible for the good and evil that is done through him by the Divine, that his real nature is beyond both good and evil, that his acts however evil were basically prompted by the Lord Himself, for man has nothing he can claim as his act. True; but faith in this attitude that ‘nothing is done by you’ that ‘it is all the Lord’s will that is being worked through you,’ must be steady, sincere, deep and unshaken. There should be no trace of ego. If that is so, then certainly such a one has attained the highest goal of life. He is blessed to the uttermost. That reality has to be known; that knowledge has to be stabilised. Indeed he who has the conviction that all this is God, that he has no sort of relationship or kinship with the objective world, that he is above and beyond it, is the Sathya-jivi, the individual whose sojourn here has been worthwhile.

“Words, however, are futile; you may repeat like a parrot that has been taught for long, certain set phrases, like ‘Everything is the Lord’s,’ ‘I am but a puppet; He pulls the strings and I dance as He wills,’ ‘Nothing is mine; I am just carrying out His Will.’ But what do you usually do? When a praiseworthy act is done, you claim it to be your own; when a blameworthy act is done, you ascribe to the prompting of the Lord! You shout from the platforms till your throats get dry that you won by your own effort honour, fame, status and standards, authority and position, property and possessions, attainments ands achievements; but, when it comes to confessing your share in earning ill fame and defeat, evil and wrong, you conveniently transfer the responsibility to the Lord saying, ‘I am but an instrument in His Hands; His is the Master, I am but a Tool!’ This has become the habit of man today. Nay, it has developed into a fashion. People swing from ‘I’ to ‘He’ like the pendulum of the clock. This is sheer deceit, hollow spiritual sham.

“Mind, word, and act all three must be filled with the belief that all is His Play; that is the genuine path. It is a human frailty to separate things as good and as evil; to impute this to God is sacrilege.” (Sai Baba, Gita Vahini, p. 101-2)

47. My ego and attachment prevent purifying my heart and realising God.

Let us investigate what comes in the way of experiencing the Atmic Principle. Ego and attachment stand as obstacles in our path. Only when you give up ego and attachment will you have purity of heart, which in turn will lead you to the experience of Supreme Wisdom. The more you develop attachment, the more restless you become. Ego is much more dangerous. It has become an incurable disease in human beings. So, you have to keep ego and attachment under control and engage yourself in the quest of Atmic bliss.” (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, November 1998, p.283-4)

48. 1The whole cosmos is nothing but a projection of my mind.

In fact, the mind alone is the cause of all things. ‘Manomoolam idam Jagat’ say the Scriptures. It means the whole cosmos is nothing but a projection of the mind.” (Sai Baba, Summer Showers 1990, p.70)

49. Everyone is verily Brahman.

...we have to realise that the fundamental principle of divinity is one only. This oneness in the culture of Bharat has been propagated since ancient times. In keeping with this great tradition, consider everyone, whether an ant or an animal or a human being, as verily Brahman. Some people may have a doubt in this context whether an animal can be equated with a human being. The behavioural pattern of animals is different from that of human beings. Considering this aspect, one may conclude that they are different. But the underlying Jiva Tattwa (principle of the Self) is one and the same in both.” (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, September 2005, p.262)

50. My mind will be controlled when I treat all sensory experiences as unreal.

When the conviction that all sensory experiences are unreal is well and truly stabilised, the mind will no longer function as a distracting agency; it will lie powerless as a defunct limb.” (Sai Baba, Upanishad Vahini, p.29)

51. True Love is selfless, free from desire, and equally loves friend and foe.

Today man is totally unaware of what is meant by Love. Man equates desire with Love. He imagines that whatever he yearns for is prompted by Love. This is not true Prema (love). Prema is totally free from desire. It is utterly selfless. It seeks no return. It is all-encompassing. It makes no distinctions between friend and foe.” (Sai Baba, Sathya Sai Speaks, Volume XXX, p.279-80)

52. The evil I think I see in others is in me.

If you see evil in others, it is the reflection of your own feelings.” (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, November 2004, p.319)

53. I already am the bliss that I seek.

Bliss is within, and you do not have to go elsewhere in search of it. In fact, there is nothing other than you! What you think is outside is only a reflection of your own inner being.” (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, April 2002, p. 113)

54. What I consider real is unreal. God alone is the one eternal Reality.

What you consider as real is unreal. What you think is unreal is the only Reality. God alone is the one eternal Reality.” (Sai Baba, Sathya Sai Speaks, Volume XXII, p.233)

55. To see Divinity, I must purify my thoughts.

If your thoughts and feelings are pure, you can see the reflection of Divinity clearly. When your thoughts are impure and wicked, you cannot see the reflection of Divinity. Mistake lies in your thoughts and not in the reflection.” (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, November 2004, p. 317)

56. By developing Love, I can annihilate my mind and get cured of any disease.

This is Swami’s message for you today. Develop love. Through love alone can you annihilate the mind and through love alone can you get cured of any disease. Only love can eradicate the evil qualities in you. So, love all. Love the Hridaya, not the physical body. Love the Divinity that is installed in your heart.” (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, August 2000, p.233)

57. All healing is through Love.

When the heart is pure, man will be free of disease.” (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, May 1997, p.126)

58. My mind and senses are not a source of truth.

In fact all that is related to the mind and the senses is nothing but ignorance. The annihilation of mind is true wisdom. Mind is a bundle of thoughts and impulses. So, all that is related to the mind is subject to change. Only the Atma is true and Eternal.” (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, August 1999, p.217)

All that you see is not indeed the reality. In fact, man is incapable of fathoming the deep divine with his senses.” (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, August 2005, p.230)

59. Everyone is Sai Baba in disguise.

Listen carefully, I am the inner Atma in the lotus heart of each and every being. So, if you believe and direct your life on the basis of the belief that the inner Atma in every being is My Paramatma, that is enough dhyana for you; stick to it steadily, practice that belief, apply it in your deeds, words and thoughts. Then the experience of Oneness, of your being Me and I being you, can be achieved.” (Sai Baba, Gita Vahini, p.172-3)

60. Maya makes me ignore the True and Eternal God.

Listen, Arjuna! Between Me and this Universe, there moves Maya, called Delusion. It is indeed a hard task for man to see beyond Maya, for Maya too is Mine. It is of the same substance; you cannot deem it separate from Me. It is My creation and under My control. It will turn in a trice, even the mightiest among men, head over heels! You might wonder why it is so difficult to overcome. Of course, it is by no means easy. Only those who are wholeheartedly attached to Me can conquer this, My maya. Arjuna, do not take Maya to mean some ugly thing that has descended from somewhere else; it is an attribute of the mind; it makes you ignore the True and Eternal Paramatma, and value instead the attribute-ful created manifold multiplicity of Name and Form. It causes the error of believing the Body as the Self, instead of the Embodied (the Deha instead of the Dehi). Maya is not something that was and will disappear; nor is it something that was not, but later came in and is. It never was or is or will be.” (Sai Baba, Gita Vahnini, p. 104-5)

61. The world I see is a reflection of me so it will change when I change.

...one sees only a reflection of one’s self in the outer world. . . .Change your outlook and the world will appear differently.” (Sai Baba, Sathya Sai Speaks, Volume XXVII, p.221)

62. I have no enemies.

Truly speaking, you have no enemies. There is none other than you in this world. When there is no second person, how can there be an enemy? All are like passing clouds. But you think they are permanent and repose faith in them. Consequently, you are unable to have faith in the pure and selfless love of God. You are forgetting the ‘divine love’ and getting intoxicated with the ‘deep wine’ of world love.” (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, November 2004, p.319-20)

63. To realise the One, I must eliminate my mind.

All the efforts made by man to realise the One are only attempts to satisfy the mind. When what is required is the elimination of the mind for experiencing the One, it is futile to strengthen the mind for this purpose by so-called sadhanas.” (Sai Baba, Sathya Sai Speaks, Volume XXIII, pp. 140-41)

When there is this realization of Brahmam–the one without a second–even the mind ceases to exist.” (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, August 1996, p.204)

164. I will love even those I consider wicked.

You are bound to experience the reflection, reaction and resound of your feelings, be they good or bad. If you see bad in others, it is only a reflection of your bad feelings. It is a mistake to blame others, ignoring your own faults. Purify your feelings in the first instance. Love even those whom you consider as wicked. In fact, nobody is wicked in this world. It is because of Bhrama (delusion) that you consider some as good and others wicked. Develop Sathya Sankalpas (noble feelings). Then you will be able to tread the path of truth.” (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, November 2002, p.329)

65. Demons do not exist. They are only a creation of my fearful thoughts.

Man is under the mistaken notion that demons exist and that they are responsible for his suffering. These are all nothing but the creation of his imagination and psychological fears.” (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, March 1999, p.58)

66. Whatever I close my heart to in others is a reflection of what is in me.

The faults you see in others are but projections of your own.” (Sai Baba, Sadhana–The Inward Path, p. 85)

67. My unloving tendencies will leave me as soon as I purify my heart.

Once you understand the principle of love, all evil tendencies will leave you by themselves.” (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, April, 2002, p.104)

68. When I cultivate sacred thoughts, I will see sacredness everywhere.

In this world, we see and hear about the dualities of good and evil, merit and sin. What is the origin of all these? They originate from man’s Sankalpas and Vikalpas (good and bad thoughts). Good and evil are present in the mind of man, not in the world. When man cultivates sacred thoughts, he will find sacredness all around” (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, April, 2003, p.119).

69. Whomever I serve, I am serving God.

You should give up the feeling that you are serving others. That is very important. You are serving your own self when you serve others. You should consider all as yours. In fact, others are not others, but the very forms of God. Hence, service rendered to humanity is service rendered to God.” (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, February 2003, p.49)

70. Without reverses in life, I shall not be able to experience Divinity.

Look with an equal mind on good fortune and misfortune, on happiness and sorrow, loss and gain. These are products of nature like heat and cold, summer and winter. They have their purposes to serve. Similarly, the ups and downs of life have lessons to teach us. In fact, without reverses in life, we shall not be able to experience Divinity. Without darkness, we cannot value light. Without experiencing difficulties, we will not enjoy benefits. It is the lack of peace of mind which compels us to seek the means to realise enduring peace.” (Sai Baba, Sathya Sai Speaks, Volume XVI, p. 45)
71. My mind hides my True Self.

What hides the Atma always is the mind. The clouds which are formed due to the Sun’s heat hide the Sun itself. Likewise the mind which is the offspring of the Atma hides the Atma itself. As long as the mind is there, man cannot hope to understand anything about the Self, not to speak of realising and experiencing the bliss of the Self. That state in which one is established in the Self at all times and under all circumstances is called ‘Sakshatkara’–Self-realisation” (Sai Baba, Summer Showers 1990, p.115)

The right kinds of Sadhana for seeking the Atma are only those that are directed toward the destruction of the mind.” (Sai Baba, Summer Showers 1990, p.118)

72. To experience my innate divinity, I must turn my vision inward and silence my mind.

When God is all-pervasive, where is the need to go in search of Him? You should make efforts to experience your innate divinity by observing total silence and turning your vision inward. You can experience divine bliss only in absolute silence. That is why it is said that ‘Silence is golden.’” (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, January 2005, p.9-10)

73. I am responsible for my karma and I can erase it.

One meaning of karma that is popularly accepted is that it is one’s destiny or fate, the inescapable ‘writing’ on the brow, which has to work itself out. There is no escaping it. But people forget that it is not written by some other hand. It is all written by one’s own hand. And the hand that wrote it can also wipe it off.” (Sai Baba, Sathya Sai Speaks Volume VIII, p.86)

74. I suffer because I do not know who I am.

Pleasure and pain are of your own making. They are not given by God. You are the cause of your suffering, none else. . . .In fact, you do not know who really you are. That is why you suffer. Once you realise that you are not the body and nothing in this world belongs to you, you will not suffer. Everything in this world is of your own making. Nothing is real.” (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, January 2004, p.5)

75. To experience God, I must give up my attachment to the body.

Body attachment is the cause of all differences. You will understand and experience unity in diversity only when you give up body attachment. Once you are free from body attachment, you can experience God in a moment.” (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, January 2005, p.11)

76. I have been born to know my True Self.

Enquire, why has God given you this body. What are you supposed to achieve with this? What is the purpose of human birth? Is it given to you to study or to play or to gossip or to amass riches? No. You are born to know your Self. Hence, question yourself, ‘Who am I?’ Once you know who you really are, you would have known everything.” (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, February 2003, p.58)
77. I have no right to judge others.

All that you see outside is a reflection of the inner being. Good and bad do not exist outside, they are mere reflections of what is within you. No one has the right to judge others. Give up all that is bad in you and you will find only goodness all around.” (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, December 1999, p.374)

With your limited understanding, you have no right to pass judgment on anything. True wisdom lies in accepting everything as good and following the path of truth.” (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, July 2004, p.195)

78. I will know my True Self when my mind is annihilated.

...Self-knowledge reveals itself after the annihilation of the mind. The still and peaceful silence that follows the destruction of the mind is itself true knowledge. . . . Remove the mind and the self-knowledge stands revealed automatically.” (Sai Baba, Summer Showers 1990, p.124)

79. My true identity is God.

Spirituality means merger with God. You are not different from God. You are God, God is you. If you are firmly established in this faith, you need not undertake any other Sadhana or spiritual practises.” (Sai Baba, Summer Showers 1990, p.142)

80. Nothing in this world is real.

The external world is created by our own chiththa (mind or inner consciousness). . . Everything is appearance. . .something mistaken to be there, but, really, non-existent” (Sai Baba, Upanishad Vahini, p.30).

81. What I do to another, I do to my Self.

You and I are one. Once you understand this truth clearly, there will be no difference whatsoever. If you slap someone on the cheek, it amounts to slapping yourself. If you abuse others, it amounts to abusing yourself. You are bound to face the consequences of your actions. You are the cause of your happiness or suffering. Others are not responsible for it. In fact, there are no others. All are one. It is your own thinking that creates the feeling of separateness in you. You should make efforts to understand your true identity. You are the very embodiment of love.” (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, April 2004, p.110)

82. Everything I see is in me because I am the basis of everything.

All that you see in the external world is present in you. The mountains, oceans, cities, villages, etc., are present in your heart. All beings are in you. You are the basis of everything.” (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, August, 2002, p.243)
83. I am not the body or the doer.

Give up the feeling that you are the body and you are the doer. Only then can you be free of delusion and fear. Reduce your body attachment. That is the most important Sadhana you have to undertake.” (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, January 2004, p.6)

84. The world is a reflection of me.

You see your own reflection in the world. After seeing the reflection if you say it is bad, then who is responsible for it? Never entertain evil thoughts. Fill your mind with sacred and divine thoughts. Then your life will be sweet.” (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, April 2003, p.121)

85. I can attain God if I become free of all desires, passion, and attachment.

One can attain the Lord without doubt if one becomes devoid of all Raga or Passion or Attachment. . . ” (Sai Baba, Prasanthi Vahini, p.36)

86. I can control and annihilate the mind by deepening my love.

If human mind is to be transformed, it can be done only by love, nothing else. Mind... mind ...mind. You know the nature of the mind. It is very strong and powerful. It cannot be controlled by any other way except love.” (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, July 2005, p.209)

Through love alone can you annihilate the mind...”(Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, August 2000, p.233)

87. By transcending the mind, I will have the vision of God.

Many spiritual aspirants in the past could have the divine vision by their intense Sadhana and by going into total silence. One has to annihilate the mind in order to have the vision of God. You cannot experience divinity unless you transcend the mind.” (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, January 2005, p. 10)

Man should transcend the mind to realise his innate divinity.” (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, October 2005, p.280)

88. I have been born to realise Love.

What is the purpose of your birth as a human being? It is not just eating, loitering and merry-making. You must understand that you are born to realise the love principle. If love blossoms in your heart, you yourself will become Paramatma (God). You need not look for God here and there. He is in you. He is in the form of love. There is no escape from dualism as long as man does not recognise his inherent divinity. You should expand your love. Live in love.”

(Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, April 2004, p.122)
89. Love is the path to liberation and Oneness.

Love is the only path that can lead you to liberation.”

(Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, March 2004, p.71)

Love is the only bond that can unite all and make us realise the one Reality behind all the seeming diversity.” (Sai Baba, Summer Showers 1990, p.82)

Ahamkara is human; Aham is divine. This Aham can be realised only by purifying one’s heart, never by studying scriptures and becoming a scholar.” (Sai Baba, Summer Showers 1990, p.125)

90. Let me see in myself and in Sai Baba all beings.

By means of Jnana, you can see in yourself and in Me all beings; then, duality and the consequent delusion will disappear, as darkness disperses before the rising sun.” (Sai Baba, Gita Vahini, p.86-7)

91. I am not the body.

Physical body grows and decays. How can you consider it to be real? In fact, nothing is this world is real. Body attachment is the cause of delusion. Hence, gradually reduce your body attachment.” (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, January 2004, p. 6)

92. I am the One.

“‘There is some mighty power, unknown to me, different from me and far away from me.’ Thinking thus, some people resort to meditation. ‘There is some secret and sacred divine power distinctly separate from me and I must acquire it.’ Imagining thus, some others observe many vows, perform several rites and undertake various austerities. All this is sheer ignorance. As long as you think there is anything different from you, so long are you submerged in ignorance. There is nothing in the universe other than you or higher than you. To think otherwise or to try to prove otherwise is nothing but your ‘Manobhranti’–mental delusion, resembling a dream. In your dream you see many sights and experience various things, but for how long are they real? Only as long as your dream lasts. When the dream ends, they are all unreal. Similarly, your hardships, losses, worries and sorrow are real only as long as your mind is under delusion. Once the delusion leaves you, they will all be unreal. They will turn out to be castles of myths created by your mind. Relying on the false ‘I,’ you are rejecting the real ‘I.’” (Sai Baba. Summer Showers 1990, p.120)

"When he perceives the whole variety of beings as resting in the One and having spread out from the One alone, he then becomes Brahman." (Bhagavad Gita, Chapter XIII, verse 30)

93. My True Self is the Athma.

The Aathma in us is identical with the Cosmic Divine Consciousness, the Param-Aathtma (Supreme Self). It is Sath-chith-aanandha; its nature can only be described as Being-Awareness-Bliss.” (Sai Baba, Sathya Sai Speaks, Volume XVI, p.51-2)

94. I always have been and always will be.

The ‘I’ associated with the mind is the false self or Mithyatma. There is only one Atma or Self and the is the ‘I.’” (Sai Baba, Summer Showers 1990, p.115-116)

Indeed, there was never a time that I was not, nor you, nor these princes of men, and verily, we shall never cease to be in the future.” (Bhagavad Gita, Chapter II, Verse 12)

95. I and you are one.

"Many persons yearn for God, worship God or contemplate on God. God cannot be realized by any of these means. All these activities are based on separating themselves from God. What is needed is a sense of oneness. How is this to be obtained? When you cultivate the feeling: 'I and you are one.' This oneness is beyond the grasp of the mind and the senses." (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, October 1996, p. 263)

96. Let me develop oneness so that the joy and grief of others will be equally mine

and I will love all as God.

Develop the consciousness that you are in all and the feeling of oneness that all is in you. Then, you can take up and succeed in all the Yogas. Then you are free from all distinctions like ‘I’ and ‘others,’ or as ‘Atma and Paramatma.’ The joy and grief of others will become equally yours. You can then never harm others; then all can be loved and adored in the awareness that they are Sarveswara.”

(Sai Baba, Gita Vahini, p.90)

97. To experience God and Oneness, I must transcend my mind.

It is only the operations of the mind that result in the perception of diversity in the universe. When oneness is experienced, there is no mind at all. All is Brahmam in that state of consciousness. There is room for only Prema (Love) in this state.” (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, August, 1996, p.204)

98. Sai Baba and I are One.

You identify Sai Baba with the body. But I am not the body. You and I are one”
(Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, April 2004, p.110).

You are God. There is only One.” (Sai Baba in Hislop’s My Baba and I, p.218)

99. To know the One, I must realise the oneness of all beings.

Spirituality means seeking to realise the oneness of all beings. There is only One. All came out of this One only. The entire creation itself came from the One.” (Sai Baba, Sathya Sai Speaks Volume XXVII, p.93-4)

100. Everything is One.

Whatever you see, whomever you come across, consider every form as nothing but manifestations of divinity. Do not entertain differences of ‘I’ and ‘you.’ You look into a mirror and say that you are in the mirror. In fact, you are not in the mirror. It is only your reflection that appears in the mirror. When you go behind the hill and shout ‘Oh!’, you will hear the echo of your voice. You may think that someone is shouting at you with the same intensity. But that is not so. That voice is yours and nobody else’s. Similarly, all that you see in the world is only your reaction, reflection and resound. It is a mistake to consider the reflection as reality. When you understand the true nature of the reflection, you will know the truth of oneness.” (Sai Baba, Sanathana Sarathi, April 2004, p.108-9)
