James Feddeck
şef conductor
“Müthiş bir buluş… Bu ayarda
müzisyenler zor bulunur.”
The Herald
Hızla günümüzün en ilgi çekici
ve dikkate değer şefleri arasına
giren James Feddeck, Atlantik’in
her iki yakasında orkestraları
Chicago
Tribune, onun için “James Feddeck: başarılı olacağı
kuşkusuz, yetenekli bir şef … müzikte kesin bir amacın
sahnedeki örneği. Apaçık temposu ve ifade gücü yüksek
hareketleri, biçemsel açıdan çok farklı üç partisyonu
anlayarak içselleştirdiğini ve fikirlerini orkestra üyelerine
güçlü, ama gösterişsiz bir şekilde geçirebildiğini ortaya
koydu” yorumunda bulundu.
Son birkaç sezonda Feddeck, Kuzey Amerika ve Avrupa’da,
aralarında Detroit, Minnesota, Toronto Senfoni, City
of Birmingham Senfoni, Royal Flemish Filarmoni,
San Francisco Senfoni, Los Angeles Oda, Helsinki
Filarmoni, Lyon Ulusal Orkestrası, Berlin Alman Senfoni
Orkestrası ve Lozan Oda Orkestrasının bulunduğu önemli
orkestralarla ilk performanslarını sergiledi.
Sanatçı 2016-17 sezonunda ve sonrasında Royal Stockholm
Filarmoni, Seattle Senfoni, Royal Liverpool Filarmoni, BBC
Filarmoni, Bournemouth Senfoni, Yeni Zelanda Senfoni,
Tazmanya Senfoni, Viyana Radyo Senfoni, Fransa Ulusal
Orkestrası, Residentie Orkest ve Hallé, İskoç Ulusal
Kraliyet Orkestrası, Rochester Filarmoni, RTÉ Ulusal
Senfoni ve BBC Senfoni orkestralarıyla konserler verecek.
2013 yılında ünlü Solti Orkestra Şefliği Ödülüne değer
görülen Feddeck, Cleveland’da yardımcı şef olarak çalıştı;
burada konser serilerini yönetmenin yanı sıra,
Don
“A tremendous find… Musicians of this calibre are like gold dust”
The Herald.
James Feddeck is rapidly becoming one of the most
interesting and remarkable conductors of today, impressing
orchestras with his innate talent and outstanding
musicianship on both sides of the Atlantic. Of his recent
debut with the Hallé,
The Guardian noted that he stepped
in “to salvage the concert with style and steel” and is “a
conductor to watch”.
Last season, Feddeck made his subscription series debut
with Chicago Symphony Orchestra, “James Feddeck: a
gifted conductor who's clearly going places … a model of
firm musical purpose on the podium. His lucid beat and
articulate gestures reflected an insightful understanding of
the three stylistically disparate scores and a vigorous, but
not ostentatious, manner of getting his ideas across to the
players” noted the
Chicago Tribune.
Over the last few seasons Feddeck has made a number
of significant North American and European debuts,
including with the Detroit, Minnesota, Toronto
Symphony, City of Birmingham Symphony, Royal Flemish
Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, Los Angeles
Chamber, Helsinki Philharmonic orchestras, as well
as Orchestre national de Lyon, Deutsches Symphonie-
Orchester Berlin and Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne.
Highlights for the 2016/17 season and beyond include debuts
with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, Seattle Symphony,
Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, BBC Philharmonic,
Bournemouth Symphony, New Zealand Symphony and
Tasmania Symphony orchestras, as well as with Radio-
Symphonieorchester Wien and Orchestre National de
France. Feddeck will also return to the Residentie Orkest and
Hallé, Royal Scottish National, Rochester Philharmonic, RTÉ
National Symphony and BBC Symphony orchestras.
Winner of the prestigious Solti Conducting Award in
2013, Feddeck is a former Assistant in Cleveland, where he
conducted subscription concerts and stepped in for Franz
Welser-Möst in a fully-staged production of
Don Giovanni
and in performances of
Carmina Burana – both to critical
acclaim. Prior to that he studied with David Zinman at the
Aspen Music Festival and School where he received the
Aspen Conducting Prize in 2008.
In addition to his conducting, James Feddeck is an
accomplished organist and has performed recitals
throughout Europe and North America. He studied oboe,
piano, organ and conducting at the Oberlin Conservatory
of Music and in 2010 was recognised by Oberlin as the first
recipient of the Outstanding Young Alumni Award.

Program Notları |Notes
Richard WAGNER (1813-1883)
Uçan Hollandalı Uvertürü | The Flying Dutchman
Overture
Hayalet gemisine binip yeniden denize açılırken Senta
üzüntüsünden kendisini kayalıklardan aşağıya atarak
intihar eder.
Wagner settled in Paris in 1839. Although the three years
he spent in Paris were full of failures, this was the period
when he matured his musical and political thoughts.
While the Grand Opera in Paris influenced his stylistic
tendencies, the socialist and revolutionary ideals of the city
made a strong impact on his political opinions.
Over this period the composer produced two major works,
Rienzi and The Flying Dutchman, and wrote articles.
Wagner had read about the story of
The Flying Dutchman
in Heinrich Heine’s 1833 novel
Aus den Memorien des
Herren von Schnabelewopski and wrote the libretto of the
work himself. Working on
The Flying Dutchman and Rienzi
at the same time, he completed both operas in 1840. After
the Court Theatre of Dresden accepted to stage these two
works,
Rienzi was premiered on October 20, 1842 and The
Flying Dutchman on January 2, 1843 under the baton of the
composer. Both works were received favorably, and Wagner
was appointed the conductor at the Dresden Court.
In the Flying Dutchman Opera, the Dutch captain who was
cursed by the Satan can only find salvation by finding a
loyal wife. On a day when he disembarked, he fell in love
with Senta, daughter of the Norwegian captain Daland.
However, he soon found out that Senta was engaged, so
she would not be a loyal wife. As he boarded his phantom
ship and sailed into the sea, Senta jumped off the cliff and
the Dutchman’s ship crashed into the rocks. The overture
is like a summary of the major themes in the work. The
Flying Dutchman theme describing the stormy sea through
predominantly brass winds is followed by a sorrowful
theme symbolizing the sad end of Senta. The rest of the
work is based on the contrast between these two themes;
the two different moods sometimes foreshadow and at
other times trigger one another. Consequently, the tension
of the music escalates, until reaching a climax where both
lovers die. In the end, the Dutchman is released from the
curse and finds peace.
In this work, Wagner laid the groundwork for the opera
theory he dubbed drama and took the first step to applying
his ideas such as the
leitmotif and making the orchestra a
part of the dramatic fiction.
Wesendonck Lieder
Bestecinin
ünlü operası
Tristan ve İsolde ile aynı dönemde –Wagner’in
1848-49 yıllarında katıldığı devrimci ayaklanmaların
başarısız olmasının ardından Dresden Operasındaki
şeflik görevini bırakmak zorunda kaldığı ve uzun süre
büyük bir bölümü Zürih’te geçen sürgün hayatı yaşadığı
dönem– yazılmıştır. Şarkılarda kullanılan şiirler Mathilde
Wesendonck’a aittir.
olur. Wagner ve Mathilde bir aşk ilişkisi yaşarlar. Bu ilişki
Tristan ve İsolde’nin ilham kaynağı olmuştur. Sırasıyla Melek,
Sessiz Ol, Sera, Acı ve Rüyalar başlıklarına sahip şarkılar
anılar ve rüyalara dair imgelerle bezenmiş felsefi ve duygusal
dışavurumları konu edinir. Müzikler Tristan ve İsolde operası
ile büyük benzerlik gösterir. Sera isimli şarkı, operanın
üçüncü bölüm prelüdü ile neredeyse birebir aynıdır.
Wagner produced only one or two works outside the opera
genre.
Wesendonck Lieder, five lieder originally written
for the piano and voice, is one of these rare works. It was
written in the same period with the composer’s well-
known opera
Tristan and Isolde, when, after the failure
of the revolutionary rebellions he took part in from 1848
to 49, Wagner had to leave his conductor position at the
Dresden Opera and live in exile for a long time, a major
part of which he spent in Zurich. The poems used in the
songs are Mathilde Wesenonck’s. Mathilde married Otto
Wesendonck, a very rich silk merchant, in 1848, and the
couple moved to Zurich in 1851. After they met Wagner in
Zurich, Otto Wesendonck became a generous patron to the
composer. Wagner and Mathilde had an affair, which was
the inspiration for
Tristan and Isolde. The songs titled The
Angel, Be Still, In the Greenhouse, Sorrows and Dreams,
respectively, are about philosophical and emotional
expressions interspersed with images about memories
and dreams. The music is very similar to that of
Tristan
and Isolde. The lied titled Sera is almost identical with the
prelude of the third movement of the opera.
Paul HINDEMITH (1895 - 1963)
Mathis der Maler: Symphony
Birinci Dünya Savaşının ardından Avrupa’da Alman
Romantizmine karşı bir tepki oluşmuş, duygusallıktan
arınmış nesnelliği elde etmeyi amaçlayan sanat akımları
ön plana çıkmıştır. Paul Hindemith bu yaklaşımın en
önemli temsilcilerindendir.
Ancak 1933 yılında Nasyonal Sosyalistlerin iktidara
gelmesinin ardından Hindemith’in yaşantısı değişir.
Goebbels’in hakarete varan ifadelerinin üzerine Hindemith
Berlin Müzik Akademisindeki görevinden ayrılır. Tam
Senfonide, Hindemith’in müziğin sosyal fonksiyonu olması
Yard.Doç.Dr. Onur Türkmen
Following the World War I, the reaction against the
German Romanticism in Europe led to the birth of artistic
movements that were relieved of sentimentality and aimed
to attain objectivity. Paul Hindemith is one of the leading
representatives of this approach.
However, after the national socialists came to power in
1933, the composer’s life changed, as the pressure on him
and his art mounted. In this period, Hindemith started
to search for a subject to write an opera on. Impressed by
the life of Matthias Grünewald, a painter who lived in the
period of the German peasant revolt at the beginning of the
16
th
century and had to practice his art under great pressure,
Hindemith started working on the work titled
Mathis
der Maler. He wrote the libretto himself. The Symphony
conceived as a preview of the opera was premiered on
March 12, 1934 in Berlin and met with severe criticism from
the partisan press. Almost insulted by the Propaganda
Minister Goebbels, Hindemith left his position at the Berlin
Academy of Music. It was exactly in this period that he
accepted the offer he received from Ankara, and took part
in the establishment of the music department at the first
State Conservatory of the young Republic of Turkey. He
also helped Jewish musicians fleeing the Nazis settle in
Turkey. In line with Hindemith’s conception that the music
should serve a social function, the Symphony included
quotations from folk songs and chorales and adopted an
understanding of harmony and counterpoint parallel to the
one found in the composer’s theoretical studies.
