Amnesty International Canada

Human Rights College for Youth 2015

Amnesty International Canada (English-Speaking Branch), will hold its Human Rights College for Youth (HRC) and its Annual General Meeting (AGM) from

May 26th-31st in Halifax, NS.
What’s it all about?

The HRC is a three day youth leadership training that takes place just prior to, and is connected with, our AGM. The HRC aims to empower and support young activists within Amnesty to facilitate their active leadership role within Amnesty International's youth program. The HRC will be a mix of skills and learning workshops, along with an opportunity for all participants to have a hands-on experience of testing out their new skills in a school setting in Halifax.

The HRC brings young Amnesty International members together to:

  • Build skills as strong human rights leader

  • Develop a knowledge & understanding of Amnesty International’s work

  • Allow for, and encourage the involvement of youth in all areas & levels of AI’s work

  • Prepare for an active role at the AGM and branch decision-making

Annual General Meeting? What’s that?

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) is Amnesty Canada’s membership meeting that takes place each year. Members from all across the country come together to meet, learn and make decisions that affect how we do our work here in Canada. All participants of the HRC will go on to attend the AGM. The AGM begins just as the Human Rights College ends. The AGM is held at the same location as the HRC: Saint Mary’s University, Halifax, Nova Scotia.

What are the dates? The HRC runs from 3pm on May 26th to 12pm on May 29th. The AGM runs from 1pm May 29th to 4pm May 31st.

Please note that only those who have not previously attended a Human Rights College may apply.

A note about the application: Yes, we are asking you for a lot of information. At the Human Rights College for Youth, we hope to bring together people from different backgrounds and with different skills and interests. We expect you to answer all of the questions, but we don’t expect everyone to answer every question with the same amount of detail.

Part 1: Basic information about you (Please print clearly)

Name _________________________ E-mail _________________________
Address _________________________ Fax _________________________

Age as of May 26, 2015 _______________ Are you: Female ___ Male ___
Questions have been condensed to save paper. If you are filling this out by hand, questions can be answered on a separate sheet.
 Are you currently part of an Amnesty group or network? If yes, please tell us.
 Are you in school? If yes, which school and what grade/year?
 Why do you want to attend the Human Rights College? Is there is a particular issue you wish to explore or skill you wish to develop? Are there ideas you wish to share?
Part 2: Tell us about your volunteer and/or work experience!
 Please describe your experience with Amnesty International to date.
 Please describe any other human rights, social justice, environmental or community work you have participated in, if any. For example: organizing a team to participate in a walk-a-thon; involvement in theatre, music, sports, clubs, and so on.
Part 3: Tell us about your hopes and dreams
 Do you have a favorite book, author, movie, or cultural figure? What makes them so special to you?
 Why did you become involved in human rights issues? Was there a particular experience or person which inspired you?
Part 4: Just a few more questions...
 This College involves 30 people ranging in age from mid-teens to mid-20s being together for three days (and then there’s the AGM time, too). That can be hectic and intense. What would help make this a safe and supportive environment? How would you contribute to this?
 Culture can be defined as all of the ideas, beliefs, values and knowledge of a group of people who share a common history. Culture includes but is not limited to language, religion, ethnic background, colour, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, educational attainment, geographic location, immigration status, age, physical ability, literacy, and parenthood. How do you contribute to this diversity? Tell us as little or as much as you wish.

 The HRC is a training experience that is designed to build strong and active youth leaders within the National Youth and Student Program and within Amnesty Canada in general. It is our expectation that participants will return to their student groups or their community and share the experience, skills and knowledge gained from the HRC, as well as act as leaders within their communities. Please tell us how you hope to meet these expectations, and what else you hope to do with this experience?

And a final note on the HRC agenda!
There is not much time at the HRC to get out and see local attractions. We like to take advantage of the time we have together to work and learn from each other. In fact, during the HRC in Halifax, there will be no off-campus time scheduled as we already have a packed agenda planned. We have instead focused on putting regular breaks into the HRC agenda to give people time to relax and take in what they are learning. If you have any comments on this, please feel free to add them below.

Registration Fee Information
The registration cost for the 2015 HRC and AGM is $250.00. This includes all meals, registration for both the HRC and the AGM, and accommodation. The fee also includes a one year membership to Amnesty International for those who are not already a paid member. This fee is non-refundable.
Participants cover their own travel costs. If you are unable to cover these costs, you should first look for funding from other sources, such as:

  • The Amnesty International group you belong to

  • Amnesty International groups in your community

  • Local service clubs

  • Student Councils, Student Federations, Student Unions

  • School

  • Place of worship

You will be surprised at how willing some of the groups listed above are to help cover your costs.

To help you search for funding from other sources, we have included a sample sponsorship letter on the next page in this application package. It is meant to be a guide – so feel free to personalize it, and make sure to talk about your experience, your goals, and why you feel attending the HRC and AGM would help you personally as well as benefit your community. Don’t forget:

  • You don’t get any money unless you ask for it.

  • Try to find a specific person to address your letter or visit to. The best approach is the direct, personal one. When others can see how passionate you are for a cause, they are likely to become passionate about it too!

  • Always follow up with a phone call.

  • If you get funding, make sure to write a thank-you letter – let them know how much you appreciated the help.

  • Ask for help from more than one organization. Not everyone will be able to support you.

  • You have to give people something for their money, even if it is only a sense of accomplishment in knowing their funds will support your good work.

If you are unable to raise enough funds to cover your travel costs, you can apply for funding from Amnesty International to cover these expenses. To request financial assistance, please email youth@amnesty.ca and ask for a copy of the financial assistance application form for the HRC. You will still also need to complete the Participant Application Form in this package. To be eligible for funding, you will need to demonstrate that you have sought funding from other sources.

Those unable to also cover the registration fee may also apply to have this fee reduced. There is a space for this on the financial assistance form.
If you are requesting financial assistance please be aware that no application will be turned down based on the request for financial assistance. We ask that participants seek out funding so that some of the costs of running the HRC can be covered and so that we can provide financial assistance to those who need it and are unable to raise the funds by themselves.

Dear (NAME),
As a youth activist involved with Amnesty International – the world’s largest human rights organization – (write a few sentences about why you became involved with Amnesty International and what you have done in your school or community so far). I am writing to you today to request funding to attend a conference which will further my ability to do this work.
Each year, Amnesty International Canada holds a Human Rights College (HRC), where young activists from across Canada gather to gain skills and knowledge that will help them make even greater contributions to human rights work. It is an unparalleled opportunity to learn firsthand from Amnesty International staff, volunteers and other activists through a series of participatory workshops and activities. The HRC is immediately followed by Amnesty International Canada’s Annual General Meeting, where I would have the chance to help the youth’s voice be heard in organizational decision-making, as well as benefit personally from its sessions and process.
Date:

Location:

Registration Fee: $250.00, plus travel expenses (research your travel costs for a flight, train or bus, and be sure to specific what mode of transportation you will be using. If you have got partial funding from another source already – e.g. your school group is covering your registration cost – mention this here).
I believe that attending the Human Rights College would help me to (write a sentence or two about what skills, knowledge, and benefits you think you would personally get out of attending the HRC). As well, I would bring the skills and knowledge I learn at the HRC back to (your hometown, community, school, or group. Then, write a few sentences about the new projects, campaigns or other work you hope to do. Talk about your personal goals, too.)
If you would like more information on the Human Rights College, please contact Shauna MacLean at the National Office of Amnesty International Canada by phone at 613-744-7667 or by email at youth@amnesty.ca. I would also be happy to share more details with you by phone or in person about this amazing opportunity.
Thank you for taking the time to consider my request for financial support. Please find my contact information at the top of this letter. I am looking forward to hearing from you!
Sincerely,
