Arithmetic Pac-Man

Instructions



  • Select the arithmetic skill you wish to practice: addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division.  Note: Division answers are given with remainders. (Pressing the letter R while the game is running allows the computer to choose the operation randomly. Described below)

  • Select whether you wish to solve basic math skills or fractions. The check box is set for basic math. To work with fractions click on the checkbox.

    • If you select fractions, select whether you want mixed fractions. The checkbox choices are proper fractions and mixed fractions. The checkbox opens as proper fractions.

    • Also select whether you want the fractions to have the same denominator or different denominators. The checkbox opens with different denominators.

  • You are the Arithmetic-Pac-Man.  At the bottom of the screen is a math problem.  Each ghost has an answer to the math problem.  Only one of the answers is correct.  Your job is to figure out the correct answer then move the Pac-Man through the maze and catch the ghost with the right answer.  If you are correct you will receive 100 points.  If you are wrong, you will loose 100 points. 

  • The WHITE squares are free zones.  While Arithmetic-Pac-Man occupies one of these squares he is safe from all ghosts.

How to Play Arithmetic-Pac-Man

  • Select the type of arithmetic problem as described above.

  • Select the difficulty level.  Click on the difficulty bar.  Difficulty varies from 1 - 10, with 10 being the most difficult.  The little red triangle indicates the difficulty level.

  • Select the maze.  There are 10 different mazes. (Most of these mazes were created by students at the Southwest Virginia Governor's School.)

  • Click on START GAME to begin play.

  • Read the arithmetic problem and find the ghost which has the right answer.  Note: Answers are on the ghosts and in the lower right corner color coded according to the ghost color.

  • Capture the ghost with the right answer.  Use the ARROW KEYS to move Math-Pac-Man.  When you have captured a ghost a new problem will be automatically generated.

  • While the game is running you can do the following:

    • Press the letter P – To pause the game so you can perform calculations with pencil and paper.

    • Press the letter R – To let the computer choose the operations randomly.

    • Press the letter N – To change the problem.

  • Note: If you want to change the game settings while playing you can stop the game by pressing the letter S.  The Math-Pac-Man must be on a safe WHITE square to stop.

  • Note: If you want to bring up the instructions on the game press the letter H.

  • Note: If you do not like the problem, press the letter N to generate a new problem.
