Business Administration 201

“I want to be an astronaut!” “I want to be a veterinarian!” “I want to be a professional baseball player!” Every kid has replied with one of these responses, and more, when asked the question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” For me it was not quite so simple. I have struggled with the idea ever since I can remember. To this day I am still not entirely set on what I want to be when I “grow up.” However, I am in college now and the time has come for me to start figuring out this entire situation. I have taken a few classes already and have crossed out some possibilities of careers that I would not enjoy. Psychologists and mathematicians are essential to the success of our society, but those jobs are not for me. As of right now, through hard work effort, I plan to pursue a degree and a career in business.

Since I have been having such a hard time with deciding on a career I figured I would pursue a career that could be useful to me in most situations. In The Essential Drucker, written by Peter F. Drucker he talks about management and how, “These days, practically all of us work for a managed institution, large or small, business or nonbusiness” (10). What better a career to pursue then one that is useful in everyday life and situations? This was a big reason for me to pursue business because I was not sure what I wanted to do but I knew that a business degree could help me almost anywhere I go in life. I am the type of person that I am always looking to improve in all aspects of my life. Drucker goes on to talk about how, “It is not necessary for a business to grow bigger; but it is necessary that it constantly grow better” (22). That is perfect for me because that is what I love to do. There is always room for improvement in everything. Now I have been involved in athletics my entire life. It has been a huge part of my life, and I absolutely love the teamwork that is involved in being a successful athlete. That leads me to my final reason for pursuing a business career. Drucker talks about teamwork and how, “Every enterprise is composed of people with different skills and knowledge doing many different kinds of work” (11). Again that is perfect for me. That makes for a really good opportunity to take the skills I have learned on the sports field and transfer them to my career.

There are a lot of different roles that one can pursue in the business world. For me, I am the type of person who really likes it when things go my way. Also, referring back to my athletic experiences, I have learned a lot about leadership. Because of those reasons I figured that a managerial position would be good for me. Also I really like helping people. There is something about that feeling of satisfaction after helping someone that I just can’t get enough of. Drucker goes on in one of his essays to say, “The result of a business is a satisfied customer” (12). That is what I am out to do in this world. If I am in a managerial role I will be able to decide what type of help I am offering and how I will go about making sure that the customers get their help.

Satisfying the customer is the main goal of a business. That is how I will contribute to society. When referring to business enterprises, Drucker goes on to say, “They do not exist for their own sake, but to fulfill a specific social purpose and to satisfy a specific need of a society, a community, or individuals” (14). Like I said earlier I love helping people. At this point I do not have a specific idea or way that I will help society, but I do know that is what I want to do. The perfect vision that I have for my business will be satisfying as many people as I can.

If I work hard enough and do well now in college, while pursuing a career in business, I will be able to run that business of mine successfully. I have many kinks to work out still. I need to figure out the specifics of the business and what I want to do with it. I do believe that I have a good foundation at this point, and I am on the pathway to success. At this point the ball is in my court, and that ball is dribbling towards a career in business. In the end the odds are that I won’t end up walking on the moon or pitching for the Yankees, but at least now when people ask me what I am going to be when I grow up I can say, “I am going to manage a business.”
